6 Concept 2 Apps: Connect Your Rower With the Web

6 Concept 2 Apps: Connect Your Rower With the Web

The Concept2 just might be the most revolutionary rowing machine ever made, and it has a lot of analytical capabilities.

You can find out how many miles/meters you’ve rowed, your average resistance level, calories burned, and tons of other information.

But is the Concept2 app the best way to do that? We’ve made a list of Concept2-friendly apps that you can use, connect with your rowing machine, and retain more data or show trending progress in different ways. It all depends on how you

6 Apps for Your Concept 2

1. LiveRowing

LiveRowing

FIND OUT MORE

Ever wonder what happens when you’re on the rower? Exactly what goes on?

While LiveRowing doesn’t tell you all the info, they give you enough to make your own deliberations. LiveRowing offers some of the most intuitive app design so the info is easy to grab, and it’s among the quickest to connect.

Concept2 actually endorses this app as one of their favorite third-party apps for their rowing machines. LiveRowing includes social options so that you can compare your data against your friends if you wish, or a rowing club for that matter.

Overall, the analytics and data capturing methods are the best, and easiest to use. At the end of the day, this shouldn’t be a difficult addition to your fitness repertoire.

2. PerfPRO Studio

PerfPRO Studio

FIND OUT MORE

This stand-alone app works well with the Concept2 by giving you different indoor rowing techniques and information on form, keeping you completely upright and burning the most amount of calories at any given time while you’re rowing.

You’ll be able to exercise extreme flexibility in your rowing techniques and patterns, which diversifies your workout and keeps on you like a trainer would.

Mix up trainer types, utilize group settings, and retain tons of data to be able to review it later. While PerfPRO Studio isn’t going to build your graphs for you, they are going to give you all the information necessary to build this all on your own.

3. BoatCoach

BoatCoach

FIND OUT MORE

As if you were actually rowing a boat outside, BoatCoach gives you real-time information as you row.

Out of all the apps, I would say this one has the most intuitive design that really gives you a lot to work with. It’s easy to use, light in terms of design, and doesn’t require a lot of storage space on your phone.

In their interface, you can access the wizard tool, which gives you the ability to customize absolutely everything. Built-in graphs and trending information make it easy to track your progress.

BoatCoach offers a good amount of data retention so that you can store what you do, and review it later. If you’re building your own workout plan, you’re going to need all this information.

4. Erg IQ

Erg IQ

FIND OUT MORE

This app is specifically designed to help you connect your Garmin Connect IQ to your Concept2.

Garmin is known for having some of the best data watches out there, tracking information from your mileage to heart rate and then some. It’s a safe bet to assume they know how to collect proper data.

Erg IQ does a decent enough job at transmitting information between Garmin and your Concept2, but that’s about it. It’s nothing overly fancy, just a useful app/tool that gives you the options that should have come standard in Garmin in the first place.

5. Row Forge

Row Forge

FIND OUT MORE

Developed by Dr. Kenneth Jay, an Exercise Physiologist, this app was designed exclusively for the Concept2, which is believed to be the most effective and useful indoor rowing machine on the market today.

This app automatically programs your PM5 monitor, which helps pull data from the screen as it happens in real time. This builds graphs and information for you that you can use to track your progress from last time to the present day, and holds onto it for a while with you.

6.Arsenei

Arsenei

FIND OUT MORE

Available exclusively on iOS, Arsenei gives you unique analytical data that surveys everything you do on your Concept2, from mileage to resistance levels (when applicable), and factors it all into your report.

The report includes a good amount of information that can help you improve in rowing, but can also hinder you at the same time. There isn’t a whole lot to do with the info in terms of exporting. It doesn’t retain the information for very long, so you have to keep your eye on everything and record it manually.

I put this at the bottom of the list because not only is it iOS exclusive, but it just doesn’t offer the same benefits as the others on this list.

Why Do You Need an Alternative App for Concept2?

Why Do You Need an Alternative App for Concept2?

The stock Concept2 app just isn’t that good. I believe that Concept2 focused exclusively on the build of their rowing machine and their screen as well, but left the app to other people to use.

Just like how Apple makes the App Store, but they don’t put every single app in it. They know that other people can do a good amount of work with their own apps.

However, the screen on the Concept2 still gives you the data you need to thrive and track your progress from the beginning to the end. There’s no data retention like most apps offer, but you’re still able to do the math yourself.

Concept2 With a Twist

All of these apps we’ve listed have been stated by Concept2 to be compatible with their best-selling rowing machine.

If you want a little something extra that can do the legwork for you, Concept2 has no issue with you using third-party apps – their focus is on keeping the machines effective and beneficial for your health more than anything else.

Best Rowing Machine: Is There an Alternative to Concept2?

Best Rowing Machine: Is There an Alternative to Concept2?

Concept2 is clearly the king of all rowing machines, but what can it offer you that other brands can’t?

We’re going to dive into that. We know that a Concept2 machine is probably going to be your first pick, and we can’t blame you: it’s a solid, beautiful piece of machinery.

Spoiler alert: the king of this list is a Concept2 Model D machine, because it’s unavoidably the best rowing machine money can buy without hemorrhaging your wallet. But because we don’t want them to be a monopoly on the rowing machine business, we’re also going to cover the alternatives.

Here, you’re going to learn all about rowing machines, what the top five have to offer, and just how much time and effort has gone into making a Concept2 rowing machine. It’s the reigning champion for a reason.

Concept2 is the reigning champion, no doubt about it. You can do more with a Concept2 than you can with any other rowing machine out there, and a lot of it derives from the technological aspects behind this machine.

To start with the tech behind this, Concept2 includes a good app with their screen and design, but they actually encourage you to use third-party apps as well.

They invite innovation, even if that means pushing their own stock app out of the way. We’ve made a full list of the best six third-party apps you can use with your Concept 2 to take your experience to the next level.

Getting into the actual specs of the machine, you get a 500 lb weight limit, making this ideal for anyone trying to lose weight. That’s all thanks to the steel frame and support system.

Even with all that heavy metal included in the construction, this is still only 57 lbs in total. Not too bad, and it’s still easy to stand it up straight and store it somewhere else when not in use.

The Concept2 fails at one point, and that’s the seat distance. It caps out a bit early, and while that’s not bad, taller users are going to have a harder time using this without scrunching up their knees.

Concept2 doesn’t have a longer option, so you’ll have to either meet the requirements or consider another option.

When you get into the magnetic resistance types and settings, you have a lot to work with. This works for beginners all the way up to more experienced rowers and cardio enthusiasts.

Rowing machines build a dozen different muscles in your body, and Concept2 has resistance levels to help you go from slender to toned like no other cardio machine can offer.

Assembly is… well, not going to be a fun time. Individually, these long pieces of metal are heavy because of the lack of leverage you have while assembling it. The magnetic rowing plate is extremely heavy, so you might have some difficulties assembling this part at first.

To wrap things up, I want to track back to the PM5 monitor that feeds information to your apps. It self-regulates based on the information you input and the speeds you use, so even if you exceed your goals and your workout times are all over the place, it self-regulates that information as it happens, all in real time.

But what’s the real reason to get a Concept2 over these alternatives? Noise reduction, smoothness on the coil, and an overall durable design that’s under a great warranty from a reputable company you can trust. Five years on the frame, two years on everything else—what more could you ask for?

WaterRower Classic Rowing Machine

WaterRower Classic Rowing Machine

CHECK LATEST PRICE

Water rowing indoors isn’t an easy, nor an inexpensive thing. Emulating the same resistance you get from outdoor rowing is insanely difficult, which is why WaterRower is the only brand that’s really trusted to handle it properly.

This all-wood, water tank resistance style rowing machine comes in a beautiful walnut color, and because of how solid and durable the wood is, you actually have a better weight cap than any steel machines on the market.

The user here can be up to 1,000 lbs, which is just overkill – that’s power that you’re never going to need, but it’s there and it’s made tough.

Because of the unique way this water resistance is, you actually work up to 84% of your muscle mass. It just works differently than magnetic resistance types.

Working with a water resistance tank isn’t easy though, and it’s going to come with a learning curve that you just don’t get with other resistance types.

Filling and emptying the tank is not only going to get messy based on where it is, but setting everything back up so that you can actually row is going to be a pain as well.

There’s no knob or dial you can just slide around to toy with the resistance rating. Your first time on this is going to be a trial and error, filling and emptying the tank until you find a good resistance, and so on.

WaterRower makes a solid tank, and the coil works like a charm. Because the wood here is painted but not treated, if you get the frame wet, you’re going to want to use a fan and dry it out immediately.

I would say that the LCD screen is one of the best on any rowing machine out there. That’s because it not only displays a lot of information in a compact way, but the buttons are intuitive – you know exactly what you have to do just by looking at the dashboard, making it easy to track your progress.

So who should consider a water rowing machine?

Anyone who’s already used a rowing machine, knows the ins and outs, and understands how imperative it is for their overall health and fitness lifestyle.

Water rowers have a higher maintenance threshold than magnetic and metal rowers, as well as a higher price tag to get into in the first place. If you know you like rowing and that it’s a long-term fitness strategy for you, that’s when you should consider a WaterRower.

MaxKare Magnetic Rower Machine

MaxKare Magnetic Rower Machine

Budgets. Everybody has one, and some people find themselves in the middle with no idea which way to go. MaxKare is that middle-of-the-road choice, with a good price tag and fair amount of space.

The seat is comfortable, the sliding motion on the frame is smooth, and the magnetic resistance flywheel works like a dream.

MaxKare excels in creating cohesive pieces of machinery. You can basically put this in any home gym, anywhere in your home, and you’re going to feel it fit with your current gym equipment.

That being said, it’s not a lightweight piece. It’s 64 lbs, which for a machine that has most of the weight in the flywheel, that’s actually pretty heavy.

It’s not going to be simple to stand upright and store, but it’s still possible if you get the right leverage on it. You have 16 levels of magnetic resistance that you can toy with, as well as an LCD monitor that displays real-time information based on the input you’re giving into the machine.

You should never rely on your foot straps too much with any rowing machine. They can be a hindrance and mess with your form if you aren’t careful, and these oversized straps on the MaxKare are a perfect example of how and why.

I will say that the actual pedals themselves have good foot traction, you just have to be wary on the straps.

MaxKare doesn’t have the best customer service, though. You can get through to them to get your warranty fulfillment, but it’s not going to be the most fun time contacting them.

It’s something to consider, though MaxKare does have a long history of delivering high-quality machinery without defects, so you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.

SereneLife Rowing Machine

SereneLife Rowing Machine

CHECK LATEST PRICE

They keep it simple: that’s what I like about SereneLife.

This rowing machine comes with an air and magnetic resistance type, which makes it feel super unique whenever you pull back on the cord. Adjusting this flywheel can be a bit of a chore, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to customize your workout like nobody else possibly could.

When it comes to the boots on the stands, they grab the carpet fairly well, which is certainly helpful if you’re on carpeting. I would recommend getting a mat for this if you plan on using it on hardwood in any capacity.

There are no stabilizers on the bottom, so your motion rocks this back and forth if you don’t have stable footing.

There’s decent glide on the seat, but you might have to WD-40 this in the future if it starts to feel a bit shifty. Cardio workouts, strength training, and overall resistance training are all achievable on SereneLife, especially when you work in the LCd screen that displays real-time information based on your input as you row.

You can track progress and extend that data to an app to build a profile of your overarching use of the rowing machine. It’s versatile and easy to use, however, SereneLife only includes a one-year warranty with your purchase.

This basically only covers you against manufacturer defects, which means that long-term damages aren’t going to be covered unless it can be directly linked to a problem during manufacturing. That’s going to be hard to do.[

Ideally, you won’t need to call on that warranty. Fortunately, you have a good customer service team behind SereneLife, so even if you do run into problems you’re good to go.

They’re a good brand to deal with and make an excellent machine, albeit a bit heavy and hard to store. Once this is built, you’re going to need leverage to tilt this up and store it vertically in the room.

Sunny Health & Fitness Elastic Cord Rower

Sunny Health & Fitness Elastic Cord Rower

CHECK LATEST PRICE

We could all do with sticking to a budget, and when it comes to your personal health equipment, there are certainly big costs that come into play. One of those comes down to brand new machinery, which is why Sunny Health & Fitness creates a lineup of inexpensive home gym equipment.

Starting from the top down, this inexpensive design is made with lightweight construction. This entire unit only weighs 43 lbs, making it extremely simple to store in your home when you’re not using it.

Position it upright, stow it in the closet; it’s easy enough to move based on the weight distribution. The heaviest part is going to be the resistance plating.

However, with a lightweight design comes a few disparities in the build. The maximum user weight limit here is only 220 lbs, which isn’t much at all. If you’re getting a rowing machine for weight loss, this might be a deal-breaker, because you really don’t want to exceed the maximum weight cap.

Sunny Health & Fitness is better suited for maintaining an already trimmed body or just trying to maintain a good workout regimen with extremely low weight loss goals in mind.

The resistance type here is magnetic, which is exactly what you want to see. The only difference is that you’re using an elastic cord to row with instead of a more durable material. It’s built thick and sturdy, so you won’t run into tearing or major issues, but it’s still not the most comfortable thing to row with.

I don’t want to come down on Sunny Health & Fitness. They made a great budget-friendly rowing machine, and it comes with some awesome benefits.

For once, there are performance stabilizers, which are designed to keep your rowing machine nice and rigid during use. Nothing is worse than everything rattling around while you’re just trying to bring up the intensity level of your workout.

Your resistance knob is easy to use, and the digital monitor is bright enough to be usable.

The thing is, it doesn’t display a whole ton of information, so if you’re looking for trending info on your health to track your progress over time, you’re going to need a Garmin watch, FitBit, or some additional apps. That’s one of the main reasons that Concept2 tops this list—they give it to you all.

Rowing Machine Buying Guide & FAQ

Is Rowing Good if You Have Bad Knees?

Is Rowing Good if You Have Bad Knees?

Everything is situational, of course. It depends on the user, it depends on health conditions, but generally rowing is actually good for your knees. Even though you are engaging your knees during rowing, you’re actually strengthening the muscles instead of wearing them down or damaging them.

Because rowing can be about 70% arms and 30% legs, you’re starting out small with dynamic movements.

It’s like working up from 10 lb dumbbells before you get to the 40 lb ones – your legs and knees endure low-level, low-stress engagement and build those critical muscles before you start engaging in other physical activities.

What Are the Main Benefits of Rowing Machines Compared to Other Cardio Machines?

Cardio in general is a good thing, but there’s a reason that other machines exist and that people have their preferences. Each cardio machine works out different muscles, and has a different maximum caloric burn on an hourly basis.

  • Minimal Joint Impact: Every dynamic movement you make reduces the impact on your joints, maximizing your overall effectiveness without degrading your body. Some exercises and other cardio machines put your joints through their paces and calcify certain areas, but with a rowing machine, you don’t have to worry about that intensity.
  • Burn More Calories: I can row for thirty minutes. I might struggle running on a treadmill for thirty minutes. The difference is in the dynamic movements: you’re burning calories in a completely different way, instead of solely focusing on just elevating your heart rate by running as fast as you can. Because you’re engaging more muscle zones—which we’re going to talk about in a minute—you burn more calories in a less stressful way.
  • Muscle Workout: It’s not just about cardio: you can work out anywhere from ten to twelve muscles all at once, which burns calories in different parts of your bodies. You have fat cells everywhere, even if you’re fit and toned. If you only practice cardio on a treadmill, there’s less movement and less areas are being exercised and accessed. With a rowing machine, all that engagement helps to evenly burn calories across your entire body.
  • Compact Design: Treadmills aren’t convenient. With a magnetic rowing machine, you can easily pick it up from one side, stand it upright, and strap it to the wall or put it into your closet. It’s not a big deal. You can then put other workout equipment in its place, which is extremely helpful if you have a smaller home or available home gym area.

Why is Rowing on the Machine Better Than Running on the Treadmill?

Why is Rowing on the Machine Better Than Running on the Treadmill?

Impact. Most of the reasons that people choose a rowing machine over a treadmill or recumbent bike is because of the impact on your joints. Rowing machines still require you to bend your knees, but like we talked about earlier, the pressure and tension is distributed elsewhere. It’s not all in your joints.

With a rowing machine, you can get in excellent, core cardio without having to use your legs nearly as much as you would on a treadmill or bike. You have the ability to put more of the pressure in your arms, so long as you keep your legs positioned appropriately for sliding on the seat.

Over time, stress on your joints can cause long-term pain that might impair your ability to exercise in the first place. That’s obviously the last thing that any of us want to happen, so it’s important to keep joint health in mind.

You can position yourself to mostly row with your arms, simply using your legs/knees to keep your form proper and mitigate the stress on them.

How Long Will a Concept2 Rower Last?

Concept2 is known as the most durable, long-lasting rower on the market, and for good reason: they’re not built cheap, they include state-of-the-art technology, and they include outstanding warranties (as well as replacement parts). Essentially, they’re the most durable piece of home gym equipment you could buy.

A Concept2 rower will last for ten to twenty years with moderate maintenance and levels of care.

You could easily get one of these to last for thirty years if you actually take care of it properly and get replacement parts directly from Concept2. I would not recommend using third-party aftermarket parts here, but otherwise, you’ll do okay.

Rowing to a Leaner You

Rowing is one of the best full-body workouts that you can possibly do. While the Concept2 is still the best rowing machine out there, these alternatives still give you an excellent workout regardless of what your goals are. It doesn’t take a lot of money to get started with indoor rowing.

Why I Like Rowing Machines–and You, Too

I have been interested in rowing machines because I figure they might help keep my knee in decent shape. Since I have had two cartilage and meniscus operations, and one motorcycle plowing into the same knee while riding my bicycle, the last thing I want is to have to get a knee replacement. If you have knee issues, you should also consider one for your exercise.

I have other issues, too. Since I am over 65, I want to keep my weight down and to make sure my calories burned are less than or equal to calories I eat. I want to prevent my muscles from getting weaker. As we age, our muscle mass tends to fall, partly due to age and partly because most seniors are less active and more sedentary.

So the low impact body workout of cardiovascular exercise and muscle conditioning make an at home indoor rowing machine a convenient option. Lose weight…get strong… keep your heart and circulation healthy….what’s not to like?

Before actually buying an indoor rowing machine, I wanted to try one out first. Fact is, rowing machines cost anywhere from a hundred bucks to several thousand dollars. So when you are looking for a good rower how do you know what’s good and what’s not?

The Basics: The Main Types of Resistance Rowing Machines

The Model d Indoor Rowing Machine makes use of air resistance. However there are several other kinds of resistance rowing machines. These use:

However, none of these indoor rowing machines has the performance record of the rowing machine concept2 model. The Murtisol is a budget rowing machine as is the magnetic resistance sunny health fitness sf-rw5515.  The WaterRower is a water rowing machine,  seen on the TV show House of Cards and costs more than the Concept 2 model d indoor rowing machine. Magnetic resistance does work but it has a different feel from the air rower, which athletes seem to prefer. Plus, the Sunny Health and Fitness, while a budget machine, appears to be less reliable than the Concept 2.

A Fitness Professional Demonstrates the Concept 2 Rower

With that in mind, I asked fitness professional physical fitness and personal trainer, Eric Anderson, tried it out myself, and asked him to demonstrate it in person. You can see the complete ‘unedited’ straight to the point interview which demonstrates the Concept2 Model D right here.

Is the Concept2 Model D Really the Top Selling Rowing Machine in the World?

Answer, yes, the Concept2 Model D really is the top selling rowing machine in the world. Of all the dozens of rowing machines that are available, why does the Concept2 enjoy such a great reputation?

I am a researcher. I use various tools that most people don’t have access to, although they’re available and usable taking in to account their cost, and the time needed to learn how to use them. Plus, I have a personal commitment to live a long and healthy life. That is what attracted me to the Concept2 Model D

What Are the Key Factors in The Concept 2’s Great Reputation?

There are several key factors contributing to  the Concept 2 Model D being the World’s Top Selling Rowing Machine. What does it mean to be the best rowing machine, as well as the most popular? [2] A simple internet search shows this machine mentioned consistently.  In fact, “USRowing is a nonprofit organization recognized by the United States Olympic Committees…..USRowing’s official suppliers include Concept 2…”[3]

One review I found particularly compelling since I have knee issues. And my guess is that you do too, if you’re at the For-Knees website.  The guy was a marathon runner, who apparently burned out his knees and now needs a low impact way to stay in shape, instead of miles of knee pounding on pavement.

Here is his review, which you can click on to see for yourself: This Machine May Save My Life

How to Use the Concept 2 Rower

When using the indoor rower, simply sit in the seat, and adjust the lever on the flywheel. Your training consists of 1 to 10 resistance levels. You can then use the pm5 Performance monitor to decide:

  1. Length of time for your workout
  2. Simulated distance
  3. You can choose intervals of time to row and rest
  4. You can choose to play games that take your mind off the activity itself, such as ‘the fish eating the fish game’, which many people enjoy

The best home rowing machine, the Concept 2 Model D Rower: finger pointing at the tracking screen

What I Personally Like about the Concept2 Model

Since I have had a history of knee problems, I am quite careful with my exercise routine. On the one hand, if I don’t exercise enough, my knee starts acting up, and if I exercise too hard and put too much stress on the knee, it can also create residual pain. With the Concept 2 model D flywheel mechanism, the user can easily set the resistance level.

The Concept2 Model is great for strength training in your home gym. It can take the place of:

  • Treadmills
  • An exercise bike
  • Ellipticals

The other thing I like about it is that it is meditative. As a kid, I used to row a boat at summer camp. When I use the rowing machine, I can close my eyes, coordinate my breathing with the action of pulling and releasing, and imagine myself on a tranquil lake. Rowing is a way to create a peaceful space in life, drop the hectic cares we deal with, and JUST ROW. Simple.

Of course, some people like to listen to music or maybe even an audio book, which is fine, too. In my own case, I am a firm believer in silence. The world is noisy enough and we are flooded with information enough already.

Get seated, set the time and/or distance, and off we go….no news,no distractions, just breathing in and breathing out, feel our heart and muscles respond. When you think about it, that is REAL LIFE. What is more simple than using our body and breathing rhythmically?

Is the Concept2 Worth Its Higher Price?

For some people, the $900+ price tag may be a little expensive. However you could always finance it by, for example paying with Paypal over several months with little or no interest due. Needless to say, you could buy a cheaper rower, and there are some pretty good ones out there, however, they may not be as durable and trouble free as the Concept 2. Plus, the manufacturer has an excellent reputation for taking care of its customers, should the need arise.

The other alternative is to get a gym membership. These memberships vary in price and quality tremendously. And there are some excellent gyms and membership programs, should you choose that route. However, your yearly gym membership fee will probably cost the same as the Concept2 Model, which lasts for years!  So– if you’d like to have one at home or want more info? Click Here!

To sum up, here are its advantages—and disadvantages

Advantages of the Concept 2 Rower

  1. Easy to use–just hop on and with very little instruction, you’re ready to go
  2. Comfortable–Just sit in the contoured seat, pull on the handle bars, push back with your feet.
  3. Versatile–You can adjust the electronic controls for distance, time, even play games to entertain yourself as you work out
  4. Adjustable–A separate lever allows you to adjust the level of strength needed to pull back
  5. Durable–In a even a professional setting with multiple users, the rower Concept 2 needs little or no maintenance.
  6. Safe–It is almost impossible to injure yourself because it is low impact, and easy on your joints
  7. Easy to Assemble
  8. Provides good range of motion
  9. Noise level is reasonable (not too noisy)
  10. Ergonomic Handle
  11. The machine comes in two colors, the black or light gray model

Disadvantages of the Concept2 Model D

  1. The LCD Monitor, which determines the type of exercise you choose requires a once a year battery change.
  2. It doesn’t have a padded seat. Some people complain that the seat is a little hard when using it for longer sessions. Using a foam pad, however, should take care of that issue, should it arise.
  3. In the case of knees, while it does encourage circulation and knee health, it also minimizes impacts on the joints, unlike jumping or going downhill. However, if your knees can’t withstand impacts, that is a positive.
  4. The price of the Concept2 Model D may be a high for some people, although it does have a 5 month payment plan.

Gym Membership vs Home Exercise

If you are looking for resistance training, you can certainly sign up for a gym membership. Prices vary widely from about $29/month to well over $100 per month, depending on where you live. Plus, if you don’t know what you’re doing, paying a personal trainer can cost up to $50 per session. In addition, it takes precious time, to get the gym, change, do the workout, shower, and return home. This results in many gym memberships going to waste, as high as 67%!

So if you can create a space in your schedule right at home, it is not only more time efficient, but in the long run, is a lot less expensive than a gym membership.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the difference between Model D and E? The difference between the two machines is that the Model E has a higher seat. That makes it easier if you have mobility issues, and find it hard to get up or sit down in the lower seat.
  2. How much does it weight? Model D weighs 57 pounds, Model E weighs 65 pounds
  3. How much weight can it bear? It can bear someone weighing up to 500 pounds
  4. Does the machine fold up? Yes, it folds for easy storage
  5. How does the resistance work? The resistance works by the adjustable flywheel, which the user can set to 10 levels

Conclusion

Rowing, whether indoor or outside, is a great overall body workout for both resistance, strength and cardiovascular training. There are many rowing machines available, however, 40 years of excellence, plus the endorsement of numerous coaches and athletic organizations suggest that the Concept2 Model D, or its cousins, theConcept2 Model E Rower if you need a higher seat due to flexibility or mobility issues

Pain Relief Machines to Reduce Joint and Muscle Pain

If you have joint pain, I am with you. I’ve had my share of immobilizing back pain and knee pain, not to mention other joints too. So I want to share some of the devices you can use right at home to soothe those aches! The inspiration for this post is the fact that I got hit by a motorcycle on my right knee, the same one that has had two knee surgeries.

I saw an orthopedist, who told me I didn’t have a real serious operable injury, but I was still on crutches, and he recommended some NSAID drug with dangerous side effects that, when I looked into it online, I wanted to avoid.

So I decided to see a physical therapist, who used several different kinds of treatment: Heat, cold, Ultrasound and TENS. A couple of those treatments and I saw good improvement without using drugs. So I’m posting this out of my own experience, so you can benefit from what I have learned both at the PT’s office as well as my own research.

Nope, I am not a ‘medical professional’, but hey, the MD was going to prescribe a drug that may end up doing more harm than good. Are you with me on the benefit of not being over-reliant on expensive prescription drugs?

Then read on!

In 2012, 40 million Americans reported knee pain. With the U.S. population aging, participating in extreme sports more often, and becoming more overweight on average, that number is surely larger today. And if you experience knee pain, you know all too well the range of negative impacts it has on daily life.

Joint and knee pain trends 2004 to 2019 have gone up 2to 4 times

Joint and knee pain trends 2004 to 2019 have gone up 2 to 4 times!

Electronic Pain Relief Devices:  Knee and Joint Pain Reduction Gadgets

There are many options for relieving knee pain. In this article, we explore therapies that use electrical devices to reduce knee and joint pain. In this study, we reviewed results for Electronic Pain Relief Devices. If you do a search for this term, guess how many results there are. On Google, there are 15,900,000 results! Crazy! But if you go to Amazon and type in the same search term, guess how many?

Over 600 results! Who has time to sort through all those? So we used the primary criteria of star ranking. Any product with less than a 4 star rating, we eliminated. But that still left over 300! So the point of this study is to give you an idea of what is available among those that are the most popular, and with the fewest complaints.

The approach I am using to evaluate these is NOT my personal experience of each product. That is less helpful than evaluating the opinions of THOUSANDS of customers who have bought and used these. Which approach is better: One person’s personal opinion, that may be biased?

Or the opinions of many many individuals, all of whose information is documented right in Amazon’s database? Thanks but I choose the latter and I suggest you do, too.

Cold Laser Therapy (also known as low-level laser therapy or LLLT) is a popular option for treating knee pain without surgery or drugs. It is also safe to use in combination with other treatments, such as physical therapy. The concept behind LLLT is  that specific wavelengths of light can stop pain and swelling in connective tissue.

The FDA approves the use of LLLT, a biostimulation laser, for temporary pain relief, including knee pain.  For more information, go here:

What to Expect

Simply place the hand-held device over the injured area. The device emits specific wavelengths of light into the affected tissue. It releases the low-level laser light for 30-120 seconds, depending on the dose desired. Determining LLLT doses depends on the extent of the injury and size of the injured area.

Research into LLLT doses shows that there can be benefits to cold laser therapy but not in all cases. There is also no accepted standard for determining the dose and duration of treatment. If you are uncertain how to use it, be sure to talk with a professional, such as a physical therapist.

How Does Cold Laser Therapy Work?

Non-thermal photons of light pass through all layers of skin to reach the painful area. The light reaches the site and reacts with the light-sensitive components of tissue cells. Many people relate it to photosynthesis in plants.

In that process, plants absorb sunlight and convert it into energy for growth and repair. The theory is that the light activates cellular processes that reduce inflammation and swelling. That kind of damage is one possible cause of knee pain. Scientific research into the exact cellular processes at the root of LLLT continues.

At the same time, no study has resulted in adverse effects to people receiving cold laser therapy.

Advantages of Cold Laser Treatments

The most obvious advantage of using cold laser therapy is that it’s non-invasive. This makes treatment more comfortable than surgery and significantly reduces recovery time. The fact that cold laser therapy has no side effects is also an advantage. The cost of LLLT is lower than surgery. The difference grows if you factor the cost of lost productivity and post-procedure care.

Disadvantages of Cold Laser Therapy

The disadvantage reported by most users is the length of treatment. Relief from knee pain can take 6-20 sessions. Variables include the level of pain and size of the affected area and your general health. The dose of LLLT and frequency of treatment sessions also play a role.

Cold laser therapy is not covered in full or in part by all insurance plans. However, as noted, you can learn how to use it yourself.

Considerations If There is a Possibility of Active Cancer or Lesions

It is best to avoid LLLT if there is the possibility of active cancer or lesions near the affected area. It’s wise to consult with a profession if you have any questions, or if it’s ok to use with children under the age of 16 or if you’re pregnant.

While some cold laser therapy machines are not available to consumers, this one is available without needing a prescription, an obvious advantage for those wanting to avoid expensive treatments.

As for customer opinions, The Tendlite Device has generally positive sentiment.. One account is by a chiropractor–he  talked about his horse, which had experienced an injury.  With just one treatment, the horse was feeling good enough to lie down and his horse friend, lay down with him since he knew his injured friend was feeling better. We should all hear such stories of healing and kindness of animals! You can read all about it here.

Severe End Stage Hip Arthritis

Rather than accepting a total hip replacement, which carries its own risks. one story about Tendlite, is that, having tried other red light therapy products without success, one woman found that it had given her the relief she needed to avoid surgery. That’s the type of story we all like to hear.

Complaints

One complaint is that the heat bulb didn’t last long, or another, that it didn’t provide relief, and the company didn’t offer good return service. However, positive sentiment outweighs negative by about 3 to . So you might want to take a look at this product.

A study on the effectiveness of infrared light therapy for low back pain relief showed that subjects who received treatment with infrared heat had an average reported pain level of 3 out of 10. That was down from 6.9 out of 10 at the start of the study.

An infrared heat lamp produces benign radiation. There are three kinds of infrared heat. The one used in infrared heat therapy which penetrates beyond the skin is IR-A. This Infrared Heat Lamp is reasonably priced.

How Do Infrared Heat Treatments Work?

Applied heat can promote the repair and rehabilitation of joints, muscles, and tendons. It improves the resilience of collagen. Collagen connects and supports muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, skin, and bone. Heat therapy can also ease inflammation, reduce muscle spasms, and increase blood flow. Improved blood flow accelerates the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the damaged area which in turn, promotes healing.

There are many ways to deliver heat therapy. The most basic and accessible are a warm bath and hot compress. These remedies are fine for relief of minor and temporary pain. But for chronic or severe musculoskeletal pain such as knee pain, infrared heat, such as this heat lamp uses, is more effective.

Infrared heat increases the temperature of tissue, muscles, tendons, etc. below the skin. But the temperature of the skin itself doesn’t increase much at all. Because the skin doesn’t get hot, high levels of heat can be delivered to the damaged tissues. The duration of treatment can also be longer.

Conclusion

This Lamp has a good reputation. Sometimes the heat lamp fails early but it is replaceable under the guarantee. See here for details.

One hazard is that if the device tips over, the heat could start a fire. However, it turns off automatically after 15 minutes. Likewise, if you touch the heating lamp at  any time or shortly after turning it off, you would get a burn. That should be as obvious as not touching a hot stove.

This pad bends with the curvature of your joint whether straight and bent.

Advantages of Infrared Heat Therapy

The most obvious advantage is the comfort to effectiveness ratio compared to hot compresses. In other words, you get the benefit of heat therapy without burning your skin. Most heat therapy provides some immediate relief. Heat therapy delivered by an infrared heating pad is no exception.

This type of device is common in clinical environments, but you can of course get one for yourself for home use. This heating pad makes use of  Far Infrared Natural Jade and Tourmaline–and is flexible so it can wrap around a body part to relieve muscle tension where you experience it —back & lower back & shoulders & waist & hip & legs & arms & knee & feet. Also, you can sit on it or lie on it.

Thanks to the nylon socalled hook-and-loop body strap, the UTK heating pad is designed to stay in place throughout your entire treatment session. Use for just 30 minutes daily (or as recommended by your doctor) to increase blood flow and reduce pain and muscle tension.

Disadvantages of Infrared Heat Therapy

It can take 5-20 sessions to achieve long-term relief, depending on the extent of the damage. Often, the best results come from a combination of heat therapy and physical or massage therapy. With at-home infrared heat therapy, trial and error is to be expected.

Finding the optimal treatment duration,  temperature and frequency can take time. For best results, consult with a trained professional before starting at-home treatments.

Considerations

If you are thinking of using an infrared heating pad at home, you’ll be glad to know that the UTK product is FDA registered. You also can set it to a specific time and temperature, since the auto-shut off timers help prevent excessive heat, which can stress or damage soft tissue.

Read product reviews and watch for comments about heat level and fit. Plus, it has a nice long cord so you can use it pretty much anywhere, a bed, chair or whatever.

The UTK Pad has generally positive sentiment..  Here is a video review which is worth watching. Some people think that it didn’t work properly, or it broke after a couple of years. Or people just didn’t get any benefit from it. The product does come with a 1 year warranty and a lifetime replacement warranty for the controller.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is an electroanalgesia, that is, a form pain relief that uses electricity. That means it uses low-voltage electrical pulses designed to relieve pain. Most often, it’s used to treat muscle and joint pain, including knee pain. It can also offer relief from pain caused by osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia.

Research into the effectiveness of TENS is ongoing. There is no conclusive proof yet of its reliability as a method of lasting pain relief.  However, if you go to a physical therapist, you will probably find that this type of pain relief machine is in the tool kit.

How Does a TENS Machine Work?TENS device in use on leg photo by Osseous on flickr

Two electrodes connect the TENS machine to the skin. Both can be placed at the pain site. Or, one can be at the pain site and the other placed on a related pressure point.

With the electrodes in place, a circuit along nerve pathways is created. A battery in the machine delivers a low-voltage current to the body.

Settings for amplitude (intensity), current duration, and current rate (frequency) can be modified. Most machines can deliver a near continuous current but this is generally inadvisable. Continuous current can create a kind of nerve fatigue. Many people report decreased pain levels in response to the current.

There are two prevailing theories to explain why. The first theory is that the electricity stimulates the nerves in an affected area. Signals sent to the brain block or override the pain signals. The second theory: electric stimulation of nerves promotes the production of endorphins. Endorphins are the body’s natural painkiller.

Common TENS Therapies

Conventional TENS therapy uses high frequency and low-intensity current in short pulses. Pain relief comes quickly and lasts while the current is on. In the absence of the current, pain slowly returns. Using the conventional method, patients can use TENS for 20-30 minutes many times throughout the day.

Another TENS therapy is related to acupuncture in that the electrodes are placed on acupuncture points. The frequency of electrical pulses is moderate but the intensity is high. Not as many people can tolerate this method, compared to the conventional therapy.

Acupuncture TENS is most often used for people seeking the benefits of acupuncture but have a fear or intolerance of needles. The pulsed TENS therapy is similar to the conventional method in that it uses short pulses of electricity. The difference is that the intensity of the burst is greater.

Electrode positioning is important and can require trial and error. Putting an electrode on the skin at the pain site is straightforward. But if the other electrode is not on top of trigger points, acupuncture sites, or cutaneous nerves, there may be minimal pain relief. (The cutaneous nerves related to knee pain are usually the anterior cutaneous branches of the femoral nerve and the posterior cutaneous nerve of thigh.)

Advantages of TENS

You can perform at-home therapy once a qualified professional has shown you how to use a TENS machine. They should also provide you with the appropriate settings. Before buying a TENS machine, it’s advisable to share the model and features with your healthcare provider. He/she can ensure the equipment is appropriate for your needs.

Disadvantages of TENS

TENS shouldn’t be used by anyone who is pregnant or has a pacemaker. Learning the proper placement of the electrodes to address your unique circumstances is critical. Electrodes shouldn’t be placed on any part of the body where the person has nerve damage or sensory impairment. Some reports state that about one-quarter of users report skin irritation at electrode sites. TENS machines for at-home use are generally not covered by insurance. Treatments in-clinic might be.

Considerations

Of all the devices reviewed here, the TENS 7000 may be the most popular. There is a similar popular machine by Omron. Omron is a major health technology company with many products, including a TENS machine. The reason I favor this TENS machine is because, although Omron is a more recognized brand, as of this writing, it costs about 2X the TENS 7000. Anyway, you can check out the Omron here.

However, a lower price point suggests that the TENS 7000.  with ten years of sales and a million sold, looks like the better buy.

What is Electrical Muscle Stimulation or EMS?

The primary purpose of Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS), also known as neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) or electromyostimulation, therapy is strengthening and rehabilitating muscle. Some users report a secondary benefit of pain reduction. EMS uses electric impulses to cause small and frequent muscle contractions.

Using EMS to aid muscles during a workout

EMS used during a squat. Source: Wikipedia Electrical Muscle Stimulation

Whereas TENS acts on the nerves, to mimic pain and override the sensation of pain, EMS uses electricity to stimulate muscle. So having a combination of the two functions, nerve stimuation by a TENS unit, and muscle stimulation by an EMS unit gives both functions.

EMS can help to prevent muscle atrophy (muscle gets smaller with lack of use) and can even be used to help build muscles by athletes, or help with workout recovery.

Considerations

The iRelieve TENS and EMS Combination Unit uses both the TENS function for pain relief as well as the EMS muscle stimulator. It claims to allow you to stop taking pain pills, which ‘have been dulling your life’. It receives this endorsement:

“I, Joe Noel, PT, licensed Physical Therapist in the State of Florida and having practiced as a PT for the last 24 years do hereby recommend the iReliev TENS + EMS unit for treating pain & increasing muscle strength. I have used TENS & EMS in my clinical practice & recommend for home use. I believe iReliev is uniquely designed to offer RX strength pain relief & muscle conditioning.”

The main complaints are that it  doesn’t work. One Critic says, “Good as a Subtle Reminder to Relax, But Not Much Else”. He noted that he should have asked his PT first. The point being that you can’t be sure that any specific treatment will work or not.

Ultrasound Therapy for Joint Pain Relief

Ultrasound therapy is used by physical therapists or occupational therapists to treat various types of pain. It acts as both a pain reliever, as well as helping to heal. This machine is a thermal ultrasound machine, which means that the sound waves it produces cause tiny vibrations in the underlying tissues, which result in heat caused by friction. This Ultracare Pro machine is good for muscle strains or sprains.

If you have swelling, a mechanical ultrasound machine may work better. It acts by reducing inflammation as it causes the minute gas bubbles in the tissue to expand and contract.

The company claims to be one of the largest selling ultrasound machines world wide. Please note that the machine needs two special types of gel in order to work:

  • Spectra 360 Electrode Gel Parker Laboratories
  • Ultrasonic Couplant High Frequency Gel

Both of these are in the “Frequently Bought Together” area on the listing

Considerations

It may take some trial and error to see which one works better. A physical therapist’s advice as to whether one or the other type of ultrasound machine would work better for you.  A few customers don’t like this product at all, think it’s a waste of money, or didn’t even work.  The top positive review admitted to being skeptical. The manual was hard to follow, but when his wife took it to the physical therapist, she easily made it work and says it works quite well.

Types of Topical Knee Pain Relief Analgesics

Joints are your body’s suspension system. They let you move freely and cushion your movements. Imagine driving a car that had a horrible screech or squeal every time you drove over a bump.

topical knee pain relief: man rubs ointment on his sore knee joint

Rubbing Your Knee with an Ointment Can Relieve Pain Fast

Would you continue to drive the car and ignore the loud sounds or would you take your car to the mechanic to try and fix it? Pain in your joints is our body’s screech or squeal. It is a sign that something is not right. Pain in your joints is the warning that your ‘suspension’ is breaking down.

Nearly 15 million Americans suffer from intense joint pain on a daily basis. Here, let’s discuss how to handle joint pain without swallowing pills. In addition, by using topical ointments, creams, sprays, and patches on the market. From topical ointments to sprays, to knee patches for the pain there’s a lot of ground to cover. Let’s get started! Here are the ones you should consider:

Topical Joint Salves

In your local pharmacy, you will find an entire aisle dedicated to pain relief. There is everything from topical ointments to braces. All these choices can make things confusing. Choosing the right one for you can present a major set of challenges. What will work best to relieve your pain?

Should you go with a couple different topical ointments? Will one do the trick? Here the various ingredients you can find in over-the-counter topical ointments and what effect they will give your joint and knee pain.

Capsaicin

The same ingredient found in chili peppers helps a lot with joint pain. It causes a burning sensation in your throat but on the skin, it actually confuses your nerves into not sending pain signals.

You need to use it a few times a day for a couple of weeks to really see the results. This makes topical ointments with capsaicin as the main ingredient a good choice if you have ongoing pain in your knees and joints like arthritis.

Whenever you use these topical ointments make sure to wash your hands really well after use. You may even want to use gloves during application so that you don’t accidentally get any in your eyes. Some popular brand names that include capsaicin are Capzasin and Zostrix.

Salicylates

If you find salicylates on the ingredient list that means it contains the same sorts of properties found in aspirin. Topical ointments like this block inflammation caused by a specific set of fatty acid mediators called prostaglandins. Blocking these mediators also has a blood thinning effect. If you have an aspirin allergy or have been advised by your doctor to avoid aspirin for any reason you should avoid these creams as well.  But if you are ok with aspirin taken orally, try these directly on your knee. After all, their pain relieving quality is right where you need it, and no stomach side effects to deal with!

Discuss your options with your doctor before deciding on a topical treatment. Popular brand names of topical ointments containing salicylates are Aspercreme and Bengay.

Counterirritants

These types of topical ointments contain ingredients that trick your body into not feeling the pain in your joints by giving you another sensation to focus on. Ingredients like menthol or camphor cause a burning/cooling feeling when you rub it in which gives your nerves another irritation to focus on. While your skin focuses on the uncomfortable feeling of the cooling or burning you are distracted from your joints.  These are great choices too.

Popular name brand counterirritants are Icy Hot and Biofreeze

Knee Joint Sprays

Sprays can be a great option when you have issues with mobility or reaching the pain. Using a spray for knee pain comes in handy when you can’t keep yourself bent over to rub in an ointment.

A spray would also work well for back pain you can’t reach. The majority of pain sprays are counterirritants. They work immediately on contact with the skin. The best sprays we could find by average rating were Biofreeze 360 Pain Relief Spray and Lifetime BlocPain Spray

Counterirritants contain menthol or camphor have an on contact cooling or burning feeling to distract your nerves from the pain.

Other ingredients to look for in sprays would be glucosamine and chondroitin and methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) which, work like their equivalent pill forms. However, in a spray, they work directly because your skin allows them to go straight to your joint!

Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM Cream

Ever told a friend that your knee is really bothering you? Chances are good they will suggest a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement to help. Why are glucosamine and chondroitin so good for joint pain that it’s become common knowledge?

Glucosamine is a natural ingredient that is found in healthy cartilage around your joints. As your cartilage wears down from overuse or injury, your levels of glucosamine drop with it. Taking a glucosamine supplement or using a topical solution including it can build your glucosamine levels back up to support the cartilage you have left.

Not only is it anti-inflammatory but in some studies, it has actually been shown to help with cartilage regeneration. Chondroitin is also a major ingredient of cartilage and works together with glucosamine to take care of your joints. When you combine the two you get the most effective cartilage boosting, anti-inflammatory response to help your arthritis, joint, and knee pain.

MSM or Methyl Sulfonylmethane is a completely natural chemical found in plants has been found to be super effective for pain relief for joints and muscles. It has also been found to be able to help in the reversal of muscle damage if taken on a consistent daily basis. The combination of the immediate relief of the counterirritant and the continued work of these powerful anti-inflammatories work well together.

You can get the combination of all three–Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and MSM in tablet form, however, for our purposes here, you can also get them as a cream.

Pain Relieving Knee Patches

Here in the US pain relieving knee patches or any sort of pain patch seems like a fairly new idea. However, in the eastern world, pain patches are nothing new and have been used for a long time to treat specific areas for pain. It makes a lot of sense that if you have knee pain, you could stick the medicine directly to the area with knee patches and get relief. Here we discuss the differences in prescription patches and those found over-the-counter.

Prescription Knee Patches

These were the first patches available in the US. You have to get them by prescription and they have heavier medications in them. The most popular pain relieving prescription knee patches are lidocaine patches. These have a dose of lidocaine built into them and you apply it directly to your joint.

Lidocaine is considered a local anesthetic because it dulls the nerves it’s applied to. So, instead of distracting the nerves, this medication stops them completely. The major downside to the heavy medicine of the prescription pain knee patches is a skin reaction to the medication.

It’s somewhat common to have a reaction to the localized medicine. So, watch out for redness or itchiness after using. Also, these types of patches come with the same sorts of risk for pain medication addiction that is associated with pills. It is recommended that you use these only as long as you have the pain and in exactly the way they are intended to avoid any issues.

Over the Counter Pain Relief Knee Patches

If you’re looking for something effective but don’t want to have to visit your doctor or are afraid of getting hooked on a medication, these over-the-counter solutions could work for you. Unlike topical ointments, patches have a concentrated amount of medicine that go specifically where you place the patch. They work immediately and don’t need to be re-applied often.

Salonpas Pain Relieving Patch

These patches contain some natural ingredients along with their primary ingredients of methyl salicylate and levomenthol. These ingredients dilate the blood vessels, relieve the pain, and have an anti-inflammatory effect afterward to keep the pain away. Since these ingredients are also counterirritants you feel some heating when you put it on which also distracts the nerves from the pain while the medication has a chance to work.

Heliopatch

The most amazing benefit to this patch is it works using no chemicals at all! With completely natural ingredients, these knee patches encourage inflammation to go down and the reversal of all sorts of pain flare-ups.

The active ingredients are glycerin, silver, and elemental magnesium. Elemental magnesium and colloidal silver are some of the most powerful relaxation minerals that have been found. Magnesium can be used to treat a number of disorders that involve inflammation because it dilates blood vessels naturally and helps rebuild bone. You can get these ingredients through diet, but this patch has a concentrated dose of them that goes straight through the skin from the patch.

Tiger Balm Patch

Tiger balm has been used for a long time in the Asia, especially in China and surrounding countries as a natural pain reliever. These knee patches have a combination of camphor and capsicum extract which provides the distraction and the heat which sends the signals away from the pain. While the smell may be off-putting at first, these patches are effective and don’t come with many precautions.

Natural Topical Remedies for Pain Relief

If the thought of medications turns you off completely there are natural ways to approach the problem as well. It’s pretty simple to make your own homemade topical ointments.

Cayenne Pepper

Don’t want to use a cream with capsaicin? Go right to the source. You can make your own natural ointment by mixing a couple tablespoons of high-quality cayenne pepper with a cup of olive oil and rubbing it into the skin. This will have a similar effect to the over-the-counter capsaicin creams you buy at the pharmacy.

Olive Oil

Speaking of olive oil, leave out the cayenne and you still have a great anti-inflammatory rub for your joints. Simply rub two to three tablespoons on the affected area for some natural relief.

Which is Best? Topical Ointments, Sprays, or Patches?

After learning about all the different types of pain relief out there for joint pain, how do you decide what’s best for you? This all comes down to what type of pain you are experiencing. You should always start with natural remedies first but, if those aren’t relieving your pain you have to look at other options.

Is it from a recent injury and you only need relief for a few days? Maybe a simple spray would be best. Do you have arthritis? Topical ointments with capsaicin may be best for its long term effects. If you are looking for a solution that means you won’t have to re-apply throughout the day and will stay on while you go about your day, knee patches could be your best bet. At the end of the day, the best solution is what works best for you and your pain.

Is It Safe To Use Topical Pain Relievers?

You need to pay attention to your body and the reaction you have to the ingredients in the medicine. You may experience some burning or stinging depending on the medicine you chose. Specifically for knee patches, keep an eye out for irritation where you place the knee patches. This could be redness, itching, or swelling. Again, talk to your doctor before using topical ointments or any topical pain relief that contain aspirin-like ingredients to make sure they are safe for you.

Knee Pain Relief May Be Just a Patch, Spray or Rub Away

With all the types of medications on the market for pain relief, it all depends on your pain and how you want to deal with it. Make sure to read your labels to find out what ingredients are in the topical ointments, sprays, or patches you’re choosing. If you don’t know what will work for you, try a variety of the different types of pain relief.

Try one of each of the different major ingredients and a natural solution as well. This way you can determine which types of ingredients are most effective for your body, your joints, and your pain. If you reach a point where none of the over-the-counter or natural remedies are working for you, it could be time to see your orthopedic specialist.

As specialists in joint pain and injury, they will be able to diagnose the problem and help you find what will work best. If it turns out to be more of a long-term problem, they may give you a prescription for higher level pain relieving knee patches.

Specialists are also aware of the latest treatments for pain and healing, so they will have much more information for you and can give you the best course of action. They could suggest you try different types of knee braces for instance. They also may suggest you start a course of physical therapy treatments. Synovial fluid or cortisone injections are medical treatment, though, which go beyond the scope of this discussion.

The 3 Best Rowing Machines for Seniors: Safe Low Impact Workouts

The 3 Best Rowing Machines for Seniors: Safe Low Impact Workouts

Rowing Machines for Seniors Over 60: Low Impact Exercise to Stay Fit and Healthy

The best rowing machines for seniors, if you are over age 60, can help you stay healthy and in shape. You can also do low impact exercise safely with machines such as, ellipticals, treadmills, or stationary cycles. They reduce risk of impact injuries to your joints.

Equipment available in gyms can vary widely. So when you’re choosing the best rowing machine or other exercise machine in a gym — or buying one for your own use — keep these factors in mind:
  • Is your health suitable for a type of exercise, especially if you are out of shape (what does your doctor say?)
  • What can you do that you’ll enjoy enough to make it a habit?
  • Do you have balance issues?
  • How much stress can your joints take without acting up?

What Kind of Exercise Machine Do You Like Best?

The exercise machine I like best is a rower. Here’s why:

  • The idea of using a treadmill reminds me of those rats in lab experiments. If I’m going to walk, I like fresh air and the outdoors.

  • Elliptical trainers are also good because they work many muscle groups. So if that’s your preference, that’s fine, too. As for me, I like sitting exercises

  • As for cycling, I prefer to combine small errands around town on a bicycle. So get the exercise as well as get somewhere, rather than a stationary cycle.

It’d be great to go rowing in a boat, but if you’re not near a river or a rowing club, then a rowing machine is a great alternative. You can even keep one around the house. They don’t take up so much room and are easy and convenient to work out on. And its an easy way to get low impact exercise.

Can You Lose Belly Fat on a Rowing Machine?

The short answer is, yes. Belly fat is the most common area people focus on to lose weight. By eating less, creating a calorie deficit, your body goes after fat to make up the difference. Because rowing involves your abdominal muscles, over time that extra flab will diminish.

Senior Moments, and Balance Issues

As seniors, we may find some memory loss or balance issues. Our joints are not what they used to be, and we want to avoid impact caused by running or other types of exercise. So for that reason, a rowing machine takes care of those issues as well.  Here are three great rowing machines you can consider.

Different Types of Rowing Machines–Air vs Magnetic Rowing Machine

There are several different types of rowers:

  • Air rowers

  • Magnetic rowers

  • Hydraulic rowers

  • Water rowers

The two most popular kinds are air rowing machines and magnetic rowing machines. For the average person, it may not make that much of a difference. But for the sake of brevity, here are the key differences.

Air rowers have different resistance levels, but the resistance increases as you row faster and harder. Magnetic rowers are set to a specific level which doesn’t change.

Air rowers make a ‘swooshing’ sound, using a flywheel and replicate the feel of actually rowing in a boat in water. Whereas, Magnetic Rowers are silent or nearly silent.

The main thing is that athletes do seem to prefer air rowers over magnetic rowers. Besides, professional athletes like the US Olympic Rowing Team prefer the Concept2. It is also very reliable.

The famous TV series, House of Cards, showed a waterrower, which is also good, but just doesn’t have the reputation of the Concept2.

But if you are not a professional athlete, prefer a quieter machine and don’t plan lots of use, a magnetic rower may be the best rowing machine for you. It’s also a less expensive choice. Now lets take a look at three of the best indoor rowing machines.

Reviewing the Best Rowing Machines

One of the best rowing machines on the market

Pros:

  • Relatively inexpensive
  • Lots of Reviews

Verdict:

A good choice for those who prefer magnetic rowers with their generally quiet operation, affordable price and consistent tension, not dependent on the speed with which you row.

Sunny Health and Fitness is a company that’s been around for 15 years. They make a variety of health and fitness products:

  • Exercise Bikes
  • Treadmills
  • Elliptical Trainers
  • Rowers
  • Dumbbells, Barbells, Kettle bells, Squat racks, and so on.

More Detail on the Sunny Fitness and Health SF-RW515 Magnetic Rower

  • This is a magnetic rower with eight resistance levels, depending on your strength and stamina levels.
  • The LCD digital monitor uses batteries, and tracks time, count, and calories
  • Use it for low impact (unlike running, jumping, etc.) aerobic and cardiovascular workouts
  • Anti slip pedals
  • Wheels to allow moving it around
  • Rowing targets most muscle groups.
  • Weight capacity is up to 220 pounds. So if you weight more than this, it’s probably better to use a different model.
  • Cushioned comfort seat, for a comfortable workout, even for longer periods
  • Foam handlegrip bar

The Sunny Health and Fitness Magnetic Rower has all the important stuff:

  • Digital Performance Monitor,
  • Foam Grip Handle Bars,
  • Non slip Foot Pedals,
  • Transportation Wheels and Adjustable Resistance.

It’s been around for quite awhile and people generally like it. At only about 1/5 the price of the higher end “premier’ rowing machine, the Concept 2 Model D. it’s one of the best rowing machines in its price range.

As for customer service, one customer said that when the machine broke, the company replaced it with no charge. That’s a good sign. We want a company that stands by its products!

On the other hand, that is not the case all the time. The company, while generally consistent, has had a few problems. In one case, the person needed to take apart the part of the machine that was making noise. The company would not replace it if they didn’t put it back together properly.

Another strange issue is that it has really mixed opinions on how quiet it is. The vast majority are very happy with it, but then there is this example.

Pros:

  • Relatively inexpensive–1/4 the price compared with the Concept2 model d indoor rower
  • Has all the basics of a rowing machine
  • Good for beginners and those who don’t use it so often

Cons:

  • Not as reliable and durable as more expensive models–problems often occur after some period of use
  • The monitor is not so easy to read and seems to be inaccurate at counting calories; it does not track distance or stroke rate
  • Customer service is mixed, with some buyers getting a full replacement, while others feel they got poor service

Verdict:  A good basic machine especially if you don’t use it heavily. A good value for the money, however, if you can afford it, or can wait and save up the money, get a more expensive machine.

If your mobility is impaired due to bad knees or other condition, don’t worry! There is another model, The Concept2 Model E,(Right hand image) which has a higher seat 20 inches off the floor. It is a bit higher in price, but has the advantage of being more accessible if you have difficulty bending or moving around. They are basically the same, it’s just that the Model E has a seat about the level of a chair.  This Model E is the best rowing machine for seniors who have trouble moving around, and getting up and down.

Conclusion

If you are over 55, impact type exercises such as running, jumping and highly strenuous workouts may not be best, and might even cause injuries. Gym equipment that requires standing, such as Elliptical or Treadmills are not everyone’s cup of tea. Unless you are near water and can do water rowing,

For that reason, a home rowing machine may be your best bet for an all around cardio, strength and flexibility program. It exercises most of your muscles but with minimal risk if used properly and increases your pulse rate. Plus, you’ll love how easy it is to get into the habit of rowing…it’s a great mental break from your usual thoughts and cares

These models have been around for quite some time and the manufacturers have good reputations. That’s important.  The Fitness Reality and the Sunny SF-RW515 Rowers go for under $400, which is a factor to consider.

But if price is no object, my overall choice for the best rowing machine for seniors or just about anyone, is the Concept 2 Rower.
