The 6 Best Supplements for Knee Nutrition and Healing

best supplements for knee pain

How to buy the best joint health supplements? There are actually THOUSANDS of supplements for joints available. For example, they may be sold as private brands on their own website or in retail shops like CVS, GNC, Costco, or a local supermarket or health food store.

How to make sense of over 10,000 choices??? And that doesn’t count excellent products that are not even sold on Amazon. For a sneak preview of some of the supplements to be reviewed here, see this chart:

Given these main categories, let’s dive in and take a closer look. First, let’s take a look at one of the most popular ingredients is supplements: Turmeric.

Turmeric – Spice as Medicine?

turmeric for knee pain

turmeric for knee pain

In comparison to other popular joint health supplements, Turmeric, a spice used in curries, has soothing properties due to its active anti-inflammatory factor Curcumin, which helps to reduce joint pain. Many joint supplements contain this excellent herbal medicine and spice. So, you might consider just buying some turmeric powder at your supermarket or natural foods store.

If you do that, it’s cheaper than the turmeric that’s made into capsules. On the other hand, if you don’t want to take the time to cook with turmeric, don’t like the taste or whatever, you can just buy capsules. You can read the reviews of them in this article. Turmeric in supplement form also may be more potent since they extract the active components.

If you like curries and spicy foods, you can purchase it in bulk at Asian markets at 1/10 of the price that it is sold for in grocery stores and supermarkets. But if you can’t find it in bulk locally, you can just go to Amazon and pick up a bag for a great price. Click on the image to check further.

Buy a pound of turmeric at a time, and it’ll last you up to a few months–and that’s using it every day. Try it as a smoothie! Go here for the recipe.

Oh – just one thing. If you use turmeric as a spice for its anti-inflammatory and other health benefits, keep in mind that it does not absorb so well into your body, UNLESS you take some black pepper with it.  And it works well if taken with some oil, such as in stir fried vegetables.

So, you can do the same thing to buy in bulk–much cheaper than buying in small quantities, and it lasts a long time. Here is the best choice for bulk black pepper on Amazon:

Vimerson Health Glucosamine Chondroitin Turmeric & MSM

Vimerson Health Glucosamine Chondroitin Turmeric & MSM supplement includes turmeric, as well as has several other joint repair and pain relief components. See the list below.

  1. Glucosamine Sulfate (1500 mg)
  2. Boswellia Extract (200 mg)
  3. Chondroitin Sulfate (150 mg)
  4. Turmeric (150 mg)
  5. Quercetin (25 mg) – anti-inflammatory and pain reliever
  6. Methionine (25 mg) – to facilitate Sulphur production for cartilage building
  7. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM, 25 mg)
  8. Bromelain (25 mg)

Ingredients Analysis:

  • Anti-inflammatory and/or Pain Reliever = Boswellia + chondroitin sulfate + turmeric + quercetin + MSM + bromelain = 575 mg
  • Joint Lubrication, Repair, and Regeneration = glucosamine sulfate + methionine = 1525 mg
  • Supports joint repair and regeneration
  • Provides pain relief
  • Reduces inflammation

Glucosamine and Chondroitin are two of the most common joint repair supplements.

The two together have shown indications of actually aiding the growth of cartilage in joints. For those whose cartilage is worn or nearly gone, that can be a big factor in these two naturally occurring chemicals’ favor.

For more details on their activity, go here, for a discussion of Glucosamine/Chondroitin in The Best Joint Supplement Ingredients for Knee Pain Relief.

You can see the most helpful review by clicking here.

The formula comes from all-natural ingredients, is non-GMO, nondairy, non-gluten, and is made in the USA, although some ingredients come from overseas.

  • In addition to turmeric, as discussed above, it has several other joint-friendly factors

  • Less pain-relieving impact compared to other supplements
  • Only two joint repairing ingredients
  • Unlike BioSchwartz, it contains only turmeric root extract, but no turmeric root

The Verdict:

The Vimerson Health glucosamine chondroitin with MSM supplement is commendable for covering the basics of joint health. The combination of glucosamine sulfate, Boswellia, chondroitin sulfate, MSM, and bromelain means it has several anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, and joint repairing and regenerating effects.

It provides six ingredients that are beneficial for joints, plus turmeric, the spice, and a small amount of bromelain, which comes from pineapple. It does not include vitamins and minerals beneficial for joint health. As for turmeric and bromelain, you can also buy them as foods, since both add flavor and joy to your cooking.

However, if you don’t necessarily eat turmeric spice as well as pineapple every day, Vimerson Health Glucosamine Chondroitin Turmeric and MSM is an excellent daily supplement to your regular (hopefully healthy, minimally junk food) diet.

We can say, of course, that a proper diet will have all the vitamins and minerals we need. But we may need more than the ‘so-called’ minimum daily requirement. Overall, a good product.

Omega 3 Oil (Fish and Vegetarian)

1. Wild Alaskan Fish Oil by Sports Research

Omega 3 Oil is one of the most essential oils for health. It helps both joints, skin, and cardiac health. Omega 3 Wild Alaskan Fish Oil has a stunning 88% 4.8-star rating, and over 800 reviews. Its page points out that wild-caught pollock from the frigid Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska give the fish their superior oil, which is then made into easy to swallow capsules. Plus, it has a rating of IFOS, the International Fish Oil Standard, of 5.

Given its high rating, and obvious popularity, what’s not to like? Well, not much.

However, I had a couple of concerns that cause me to offer an alternative for you to check out. The Sports Research information points out that many fish oil supplements are made of mixed quality oils that may have limited benefits. That is true.

So if you’re in the market for a good Omega 3 supplement from fish, you’re on the right track with the Sports Research Omega 3 Wild Alaskan Fish Oil. Here are two things to carefully consider:

  • While farmed fish has oil, studies show that they are fed so many antibiotics and dead fish meal, that they have a lot of toxins…not Good. That makes wild fish superior. However, wild fish populations are in decline, seriously. So if there is a way to get our Omega 3 without reducing the wild fish population, we should consider it.
  • Second is an issue that nobody wants to talk about: Radiation.

In 2011, the nuclear power plant in Fukushima, Japan, melted down spewing tons of highly radioactive material into the Pacific Ocean. There are conflicting studies, ranging from ‘the danger has passed’ fish is perfectly safe to eat,’ to ‘there is a mass die-off of fish and other animals who eat fish, in the wake of mass radiation poisoning.

So, who’s right? Here are a couple of links, so if you want to check this issue out, and decide for yourself.

So, what is the alternative? Flaxseed oil. Here is a Harvard University study regarding plant-based versus fish based Omega 3 oil. If you decide that you want to include Omega 3’s into your supplement list, then the best choice would probably be Naturwise.

2. NatureWise Organic Flaxseed Oil

As you can see, Naturwise Organic Flaxseed Oil also has a very high rating and lots of reviews, so it’s a good bet for your hard-earned money. The benefits are similar to Fish Oil Omega 3 oil; however, they’re not quite the same. As this study from University Health News points out:

<<“ human studies have shown that intake of vegetarian omega-3 sources (ALA) plus certain vitamins, like vitamin B6, leads to optimal levels of EPA and DHA inside the body’s cells and tissues. Therefore, direct dietary intake of omega-3 fats rich in EPA and DHA through food or supplements is the most beneficial…”>>

Nevertheless, given the concerns related to contamination in wild fish and their declining populations, and the rising interest in vegetarian diets, I felt it’s a good idea to feature an excellent vegetarian alternative.

What do you think? One last point is that the Harvard Study didn’t mention joint health as a factor in Omega 3. To put that doubt to rest, see this article in Web MD: “Supplements for Arthritis and Joint Pain.”

  • Good quality fish oil clearly shows positive outcomes for heart and joint health
  • Flaxseed may also have good effects because it does contain Omega 3.
  • Flaxseed is organic and vegetarian, so it has no discernible risks

  • There is some possibility of contamination of ocean-based fish oils
  • Fish populations are declining
  • Flaxseed does not seem to be as efficient as fish oil in delivering the right DHA and EPA to your body

Well, I suppose if you have read this far, you expect me to tell you what to do and what to buy if you’re interested in Omega 3’s as an anti-inflammatory for your joint pain. What I can say is that here are all the facts laid out for you.

Both fish-based and vegetarian based Omega 3s, the Wild Alaskan Fish Oil, and the Naturewise Flaxseed Oils are at the top of their class. So it’s a judgment call on your part which to choose.

Premium Multi Collagen Peptide Capsules

Collagen is the most common protein in our body, but over time as we age, it diminishes. That is most likely one of the factors in wrinkles, sore joints, and other health issues, such as muscle weakening, and even heart health.

By supplying extra collagen, we can improve our knee health, as well as the other parts of our body. Pretty compelling, don’t you think?

Here are the main features of Premium Multi Collagen Peptide Capsules

  • Derived from 5 kinds of collagen–Grass-Fed Beef, Chicken, Fish, Eggshell Membrane (the inner ‘skin’ inside the eggshell), and Bird Sternum (the sternum is the ‘chest bone’ at the base of your ribs in the middle of your chest.
  • It contains 1500 mg of multi collagen as noted from the above sources
  • Promotes Muscle Recovery and Joint and Bone Health
  • Other health benefits to your gut, skin, even hair, and nails
  • Made in the USA from non-GMO ingredients
  • Independently tested

  • Discounts for both multiple purchases or subscription payments
  • All the above benefits noted along with its non-GMO purity

  • If you are vegetarian, sorry, this product is not for you. All its ingredients are animal-based
  • Some users have reported that if you take too much, it causes skin outbreaks

Premium Multi Collagen Peptide Capsules are one of the most popular collagen supplements, and scientific research does indicate that having enough collagen can help our overall health.

Zenwise: Glucosamine Chondroitin Sulfate MSM Curcumin – Joint Supplement with Hyaluronic Acid

Glucosamine Chondroitin Sulfate MSM Curcumin – Joint Supplement with Hyaluronic Acid by Zenwise is similar to some of the products we reviewed earlier. It is very similar to the Vimerson supplement, with a significant difference. Unlike the other products reviewed, Zenwise includes Hyaluronic Acid and the herb, Boswellia. Here is a list of ingredients:

  • Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM all of which support joint health, cartilage and collagen
  • Curcumin from Turmeric
  • Boswellia, an anti-inflammatory herb, also known as Frankincense
  • Hyaluronic Acid, which is a naturally occurring ingredient that supports joints and flexibility

Hyaluronic Acid

Here is why Hyaluronic Acid may help with your joint issues, according to the website

  • Lubricates joints, which helps relieve knee pain
  • Keeps bones strong
  • Speeds healing wounds
  • Improves skin health
  • Relieves symptoms of Acid Reflux
  • Reduces “dry eye,” which sometimes affects older adults
  • May prevent bladder pain in older women

Of course, for our purposes, the first two factors, maintaining joints and bones, are top priorities, but the other five benefits can only be bonuses. It’s also extremely safe to use.

The only cautionary issues are that it may not be advisable for pregnant women or people who have or have had cancer. The reason why Zenwise is included in this review is that it has the other well-regarded ingredients we’ve covered as well as including hyaluronic acid.

Boswellia Serrata

Zenwise also has the Indian Herb, Boswellia, otherwise known as Frankincense. The US government has issued an informational article pointing out its anti-inflammatory properties.

Here is a link to a video review

  • The most common joint support ingredients, Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and MSM
  • Two addition ingredients that help, hyaluronic acid and Boswellia
  • Exceptional reputation, been around several years. 4.5-star rank
  • Reasonably priced

  • Several people have complained that these are pills are more difficult to swallow than capsules
  • What’s more, “the pills are huge” according to some and virtually impossible to swallow
  • They contain binders, so they’re not exactly purely ingredients
  • Like other products with Glucosamine, these contain shellfish. Some people may be allergic to this.

Zenwise has been around for quite a while. It combines ingredients of different types, all in one pill. The pills may be large for some people; however, its 4.5-star rating indicates that it’s helped a lot of people, and for a fair price. For full details on Zenwise, go here.

Other Supplements for Knee Pain Relief and Recovery

In addition to the choices we have outlined above, there are a couple of other supplements you can use to help with arthritis pain and joint pain.

Green Tea

This is a powerful antioxidant and also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help you combat any joint pain you may be experiencing. It is also good for fighting against free radicals that can ultimately cause cell damage. Green tea is also a good source of epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG), which is a type of polyphenol that has even more potent antioxidant benefits.

You can find green tea supplements in a powder or capsule form. However, before starting green tea supplements, you must talk with your doctor. Green tea contains caffeine and can be dangerous when too much has been consumed. Additionally, if you have any other underlying health conditions such as high blood pressure, kidney or liver problems, or stomach ulcers, your doctor may advise against green tea supplements.

Vitamin D

Another supplement that is essential for those suffering from joint pain is Vitamin D. This is a vitamin that is vital for bone and muscle function. It is also known to have anti-inflammatory properties as well. Because of these properties, Vitamin D has been shown to help relieve joint pain, especially the joint pain in which the cause is inflammation.

When you have a Vitamin D deficiency, it can affect your physical and mental health, and not many people realize that their Vitamin D levels are low. Some of the symptoms of low Vitamin D include rheumatoid arthritis pain, muscle pain in the joints, and other pain occurring in the knees, legs, and hips.

This kind of deficiency has also been associated with the development of osteoarthritis, autoimmune arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. A simple blood test at your doctor’s office can determine if you have low Vitamin D levels.

What I Use Personally for My Turmeric and Vitamin D–Liposomal Liquid Supplements

One of the most important issues surrounding supplements in general is bioavaliability.  You can take all the supplements and vitamins you want. But what if your body simply can’t absorb them because they either pass through your digestive system and you lose them? Or, they get digested in the acidic environment of your stomach?

The solution to this problem is Liposomal Supplements.

For these reasons, scientists have developed some super high powered concentrates of vitamins and other supplements like Turmeric. I take these on a regular basis. They may be a bit pricier than the standard capsules and tablets, but the likelihood of your body absorbing them is much higher.

The company that manufactures these is Purathrive. It makes a variety of both vitamin and herbal supplements that use liposomal technology to protect the nutrient (for example, turmeric, Vitamin B12, C, D, and so on.

If you really want the ‘best of the best’ check them out. The information of Turmeric is found here.

The Number 1 Best Liposomal Turmeric: Purathrive

Best Liposomal Turmeric–Purathrive

Turmeric is a root that is very common in Asia. It’s a common ingredient in curries, and gives them a distinctive yellow color.  In addition to the wonderful flavor it gives food, it may help your body in various ways, among them:

diagram of Liposome and micelle

  • Improve Glucose metabolism
  • Reduce Joint Pain
  • Alleviate Chronic Inflammation
  • Boost Immune system
  • Aid health of our cell membranes

Consult with your healthcare practitioner if any of these issues relate to your health.

The Problems with Turmeric and Curcumin

Turmeric is a root spice that’s related to ginger. Turmeric and its active ingredient Curcumin have a well deserved reputation for its many health benefits. But people have several objections to using it.

  • It’s inconvenient to cook with unless you really enjoy cooking
  • It tastes funny to some people
  • Who wants to taste the same thing every day?
  • You don’t like using it as a spice
  • You don’t want to take it as a supplement as a pill or capsule, and besides it doesn’t get absorbed well by your body

Curcumin exerts a wide range of beneficial physiological and pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, anti-amyloid, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-neoplastic, immune-modulating, metabolism regulating, anti-depressant, neuroprotective and tissue protective effects (1)

So what to do? Some turmeric products come as a liquid turmeric extract. But there is a problem there, too, because our digestive system doesn’t let it get to our bloodstream. So much of the benefit is lost. Likewise, the active ingredient in the turmeric root, curcumin and its related curcuminoids, is not readily absorbed by the body.

In this article, we’ll address these issues.

Which Form of Turmeric Is Best Absorbed?

The fact is, that specially processed turmeric (and supplements and related products in general) is best absorbed when it goes through a special process, to become liposomal turmeric, and likewise, its related cousin, liposomal curcumin.

What is Liposomal Turmeric?

Liposomes and micelles are special naturally chemicals. By treating any nutrient with these materials, they pass through the stomach unaffected by the normal digestive process. The micelles then aid the nutrient, in this case Turmeric or Curcumin, to be absorbed in the small intestine. This liposomal process differentiates Purathrive products from other forms of turmeric such as the natural turmeric root, turmeric pills, capsules, and likewise, curcumin supplements in their usual pill or capsule form

Research into liposome delivery systems is expanding into different areas including vitamins, minerals…..(1)

Micelles used as carriers for therapeutics in aqueous media can carry lipophilic drugs within its core while micelle’s surface binds polar molecules. Improved aqueous solubility and thus better intestinal permeability of micelles is achieved by formation of polymeric micelles(2)

What Makes Purathrive Liposomal Supplements and Vitamins Different?

  1. All Purathrive products are made with micelles and liposomes.
  2. Liposomes protect the nutrient in the presence of stomach acid which digests food
  3. After passing from the stomach into the small intestine, the microscopic micelles allow the nutrient to be absorbed
  4. The combination of micelles and liposome phospholipids results in nutrients to become far more bioavalable
  5. Supplements without the liposomal and micelle advantage general are not absorbed, resulting in the ‘expensive pee’ problem
  6. Liposomes and micelles are part of your body makeup, so they’re natural and safe, unlike other types of food additives. And since nutrients can be more concentrated, a little goes a long way–Up to 185X better absorbed!(1)
  7. Purathrive herbal and vitamin supplements are all cerified by the US Food and Drug Administration
  8. They’re made in a GMP compliant laboratory in the United States State of California
  9. They conform to the strict California Prop 65 safety standard and are free of lead, and other toxic minerals
  10. Soy free
  11. non GMO
  12. Gluten free, which results in less likelihood of allergic reaction
  13. Rigorously tested by an independent third party, which is itself licensed and accredited
  14. The curcumin test involves the HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography
  15. Free of radioactivity, using the Fluke 481 Radiation Detection Meter
  16. All Certified Organic and free of chemical herbicides, pesticides, antibiotics, and are non irradiated

Enhanced with Fulvic Acid

Unlike other Turmeric supplements, Purathrive Liposomal Turneric also includes Fulvic Acid in its formulation of ingredients.

What is Fulvic Acid?

Fulvic Acid is a naturally occurring chemical that comes from soil and is extracted using water and CO2, and it carries a variety of nutrients beneficial to the human body. It contains an assortment of hormones, fatty acids, ketones, flavinoids, vitamins and minerals. Fulvic acid aids digestion and helps the body to absorb nutrients more efficiently.  It may have these benefits –although more evidence is needed to verify these uses(2):

  • Reduces inflammation
  • May slow progress of some cancers
  • Aid with brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease
  • May prevent allergic reactions
  • Has immune enhancing and anti oxidant effects

The Best Form of Turmeric–10 Ways to Look at It

The Best Form of Turmeric–10 Ways to Look at It

Turmeric Comes in Many Forms

But what are the best turmeric forms to use, depending on the situation?  Turmeric and curcumin, its active component, one of the most common herbs and spices in the world, comes in its natural form as a root. People throughout Asia have been using turmeric spice for centuries in their food. It’s what gives the yellow color in curries.

But at the same time, turmeric curcumin also has numerous health benefits. Depending on your situation, you can use one of the many different forms of turmeric.

Here is a chart of turmeric products you can use at home:

This is a list of different forms of turmeric you can use in specific situations:

  1. Gummies, an easy to take form for your turmeric supplement
  2. A face mask, to improve your complexion
  3. Soup, a quick way to have a spicy meal while ingesting it for overall health
  4. A face serum, similar use as a mask, but instead you just rub it in to your skin
  5. Turmeric incorporated into soap, so your skin gets the benefits while washing
  6. As a beverage
  7. Capsules, the most common way people take turmeric curcumin for supplementation
  8. As a powder, especially with the right combination of black pepper, which evidence suggests aids absorption into your body

“….turmeric and curcuminoids, when extracted from the root, and used in a liquid form with liposomal enhancement, may be the best way for your body to absorb them.”

However, from a supplement point of view, turmeric and curcuminoids, when extracted from the root, and used in a liquid form with liposomal enhancement, may be the best way for your body to absorb them.

“Depending on your situation, you can use one of the many different forms of turmeric”.

We’ll talk about these in this article, but first, let’s ask the first question:

Are People Becoming More interested in Turmeric?

Take a look at this graphic from Google Trends showing the increase in searches for “Turmeric”, since 1004. Interest in Turmeric has increase 24X since 2004!

Turmeric searches since 2004

What Is Turmeric?

Turmeric flower

Turmeric is a flowering plant. Photo courtesy of Lucien Monfils

Turmeric is a flowering plant and root herb related to ginger.

The origin of the plant Curcuma longa L., which belongs to Zingiberaceae family is India….has a long history of use in food as a spice, mainly as an ingredient in many varieties of curry powders and sauces, where curcumin from turmeric is a main colouring substance (1)

Not only does it give foods a bright yellow color, it has a distinctive flavor and is used in curries. But that’s not all!

What Are the Benefits of Turmeric?

For centuries, Ayurvedic Medicine of India has used turmeric for these health conditions, to name just a few(2):

  • Turmeric curcumin may alleviate rheumatoid arthritis(7)
  • liver ailments (Dixit, Jain, and Joshi 1988).
  • Heart disease(8)
  • Helps regulate blood sugar levels(9)
  • It is also used for digestive disorders; to reduce flatus, jaundice, ulcerative colitis(10)
  • premenstrual difficulties,(11) and colic;
  • abdominal pain and distension  (Bundy et al. 2004);
  • dyspeptic conditions including loss of appetite,(10)
  • Acts as an anti inflammatory for gallbladder(11) complaints.
  • Curcumin may relieve oxidative stress associated with diabetes(12)
  • It has anti inflammatory, choleretic, antimicrobial, and carminative actions (Mills and Bone 2000).
  • Plus, it does not interfere with other drugs according to German studies. (Blumenthal, Goldberg, and Brinckmann 2000).  It has minimal side effects.

At this point, you’re probably thinking, ‘Well, that’s all great, but…..”

If I Take Turmeric, How Can It Help Me?

Since For-Knees is all about taking better care of your knees, what you need to know is that turmeric, and its main ingredient curcumin has anti inflammatory properties. That means, pain relief. And how should you take it?

What Are the Best Ways to Use Turmeric?

Turmeric comes in many forms, both natural as well as processed.(3) Here are some examples: courtesy of the National Institute of Health, US Government

best forms of turmeric-capsules, in creams, drinks, soup, soap

Various curcumin-based products include capsules, tablets, ointments, energy drinks, soaps, and cosmetics.

  • Natural Turmeric Root (which you can use both in cooking as well as for its health benefits. (It’s a good idea to use black pepper with it, because its active ingredient, piperine, makes the active ingredient, curcumin help your body absorb it better. Also known as ‘bioavailable’.
  • Turmeric Powder, that is turmeric in its dried form.
  • Turmeric pills and capsules
  • Turmeric gummies, that is, in a candy like chewable form
  • Turmeric as a salve or ointment, which you can apply directly where you want it to go on your body
  • You can even buy turmeric soap, and even turmeric drinks, beauty creams and
  • As a liquid turmeric extract, which may also be more bioavailable
  • Liposomal based turmeric supplements maximize your body’s ability to absorb the active curcumin

What Is Meant by Curcumin or Turmeric?

Please note that curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric(4). Here is what one study said:

Curcumin (4) is the major active component of turmeric, a yellow compound originally isolated from the plant Curcuma longa….

Furthermore, traditional Indian medicine has considered curcumin a drug effective for various respiratory conditions (asthma, bronchial hyperactivity, and allergy) as well as for other disorders including anorexia, coryza, cough, hepatic diseases, and sinusitis [1,2].

Extensive research over the past 30 years has shown that it plays an important role in the prevention and treatment of various pro-inflammatory chronic diseases including neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, autoimmune and malignant diseases.

This means that taking turmeric curcumin in supplement form, may help you in various ways. Often, black pepper or black pepper extract as piperine can help your body absorb it.

However, taking turmeric supplements usually means taking pills and capsules. there are two reasons NOT to do that. First, if you’re already taking a lot of pills or capsules as vitamins or other supplements, it can get to be a bit much, right?

You may also find that when you take too many pills at once, they’re hard to digest.

Is It Better to Take Turmeric Powder or Capsules?

Whether you take turmeric as a powder or capsules is a matter of preference. For years, I have taken turmeric in its natural powder form as part of my diet. I cooked various dishes with it, made salad dressing, turmeric lattes and turmeric fruit or veggie shakes. And made sure that I was taking it along with some vegetable oil since it’s oil soluble.

I also added black pepper, which may improve absorption of the curcumin by your body, that is,  bioavailable. Fresh turmeric root is also good in soups and other cooked dishes. And it doesn’t lose it benefits when heated.

“…black pepper or black pepper extract as piperine can help your body absorb it”

But what if you don’t like the taste of it? In that case, take the pill. But remember to use pills that include bioperine/black pepper, so your body absorbs it better. Or take it in an enhanced form, such as in its liposomal form.

What if you don’t want to be bothered with making drinks or soups from scratch? What if you want to incorporate turmeric into you daily skin health routine, and don’t want to mix up a bunch of turmeric powder, which can get messy?

And what if you simply want the pure health benefits with maximum absorption?

How Are Turmeric or Curcumin Best Absorbed?

The simple fact is that your body does not absorb turmeric or curcumin very well (4). A lot of the potential benefit of turmeric or turmeric curcumin taken as food, loses a lot of its potency during digestion. So what is the solution to this problem? Covering the curcumin with a coating that gets to the optimum place in your body where you can absorb it.

The formulation silica-coated flexible liposomes loaded with curcumin (CUR-SLs) and curcumin-loaded flexible liposomes (CUR-FLs) without silica-coatings have been designed and found that the bioavailability of CUR-SLs and CUR-FLs was 7.76- and 2.35-fold higher, respectively, than that of curcumin suspensions.(4)

Do you get that? This means that the tiny curcumin particles are covered in a special process, to survive being digested in your stomach, so that they can be absorbed later in your intestines. The Liposomal Turmeric or Curcumin comes in a liquid form, that you can just add to your favorite food, or simply take orally with a glass of water. Just a few drops does the trick!

In our opinion, this highly liposomal concentrated liquid form is the best way to take a turmeric supplement or curcumin supplement.

Other Considerations

It’s important to note whether the turmeric you’re using, either as a powder or in a processed form is totally safe.

GMO issues

Unfortunately, nowadays, many foods may be made with GMO’s. For example, in the US, many common foods are now GMO (12). And some studies show that GMO may have an adverse effect on health. For this reason, to its credit, the large spice and herb company, McCormick committed to making its products NON GMO as of 2016.(5)

Is Your Turmeric Contaminated with Lead?

A recent news story stated that some turmeric powder sold in Bangladesh had a dye added to it, to make the powder more colorful and attractive (6) However, the suppliers may or may not have known that they were using the highly toxic compound. lead chromate.

While most turmeric sold in the US is properly sourced, it’s something to consider, especially if you buy from a local Indian or South Asian food store.  Of course, supplements don’t have that problem.

Depending on what your objectives are, there are many ways to get the benefits of turmeric curcumin. If you like the taste of turmeric and want the benefits, then cooking with it as a spice, or drinking it as a latte or in shakes is a great way to use it. Just be aware of the issue of absorbtion into your body.

You can use it externally for your skin and even use it directly to improve joint health.

Finally, if you simply want the convenience of the benefits of turmeric and curcumin, you can take it as pills or capsules. For maximum absorption, however, in its purest extract form, use it in its liposomal form.  For more detailed information about Liposomal Supplements, go here.

Nonsteroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs for Pain Relief

If you just want to know what are the best products NSAID’s here is the list:

The other day, I was having lunch with a couple of friends of mine, and the subject of pain relief, such as painful joints, painful back, and, in my case, painful knees came up.

My two friends mentioned that they were using a couple of drugs, which are generally known as NSAIDs or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. While true that not all joint pain is due to arthritis, a significant amount is.

Here is what the CDC, or the US Government Agency Center for Disease Control has to say about this: “Between 2013 and 2015, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that nearly 23 percent of Americans had a diagnosable joint disorder. Though most of these can be classified as arthritis, that category is broad. There are over 100 different varieties of arthritis. Still, a large percentage of those cases fall into two main categories and if you experience joint pain, yours could too.”

What are NSAID Drugs?

NSAID stands for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. One of the leading causes of pain is inflammation. Steroidal drugs, such as cortisone or prednisone, are steroids, which also reduce inflammation.

NSAIDs work differently from steroids. They are called COX (Cyclo-Oxygenase enzymes) blockers. They reduce another chemical in the body, prostaglandins. This results in a reduction of symptoms such as pain, inflammation, and fever.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) are a group of medicines that relieve pain and fever and reduce inflammation. There are nearly two dozen different NSAIDs available, but they all work in the same way, and that is by blocking a specific group of enzymes called cyclo-oxygenase enzymes, often abbreviated to COX enzymes.

What are the Benefits of NSAIDs?

Pain is an unfortunate aspect of life. It can come at any age and from a variety of causes, such as illness or injury. In seeking relief from pain, people often use some type of medicine.

Two common medicines for pain relief are opioids and steroids, and both can lead to significant problems. Opioids are highly addictive. There is a serious crisis from the use of opioids, such as Oxycontin, which we hear about in the news almost daily.

Steroids are not addictive, but they can have significant side effects, such as the thinning of tissues. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, especially those sold ‘over the counter’ without a prescription, are readily available, not expensive, and they do work. They have a long list of benefits.

When an individual is feeling pain or experiencing inflammation in a particular region of the body, OTC medication is often adequate for providing pain relief. NSAIDs are accessible at department stores and drugstores, over the counter.

Common Side Effects of NSAIDs

NSAIDs are enormously popular drugs that can relieve pain. However, they can have annoying or even serious side effects. The most common side effect is stomach irritation.

However, if you take them over a more extended time, more severe symptoms can be experienced, including a tendency to bleed more easily, ringing in the ears, headaches, an increase in blood pressure, kidney and liver problems, heart attack, and stroke.

One friend told me that he took Ibuprofen, one of the most common NSAIDs for three days, and his blood pressure then jumped to 180/100! He knew something was wrong because he started feeling dizzy.

Fortunately, he has a home blood pressure monitor and caught it. For that reason, it might be better to use more natural alternatives if possible.

Anyway, the fact is that NSAIDs are very popular and effective if used properly.

However, go here for a more detailed discussion of the side effects of long term NSAID use.

Like Advil Liqui-Gels, Aleve comes in an easy to swallow form. It is also extremely popular, selling several thousand bottles a month. It states explicitly that it is meant for minor arthritis, back, and body pain.

The liquid gel capsule provides 12 hours of pain relief. It ranks #2 as Naproxen Sodium on Amazon; however, it maintains that “Aleve is the #1 Orthopedic Surgeon recommended over the counter brand for minor arthritis pain.” That is quite a strong endorsement. Its possible advantage is its liquid gel form, which may be absorbed more quickly and easily than tablets, although this is not authenticated.

It provides temporary relief for those suffering from minor aches and pains, muscular aches, headaches, joint pain, menstrual pain, toothaches, and the common cold. It can also temporarily reduce fever.

These Advil coated tablets can relieve pain and reduce fever. It helps with the minor aches and pains associated with muscle aches, backaches, arthritis pain, and can help stop pain right at the site of inflammation. Each coated tablet contains 200 milligrams of ibuprofen and offers safe pain relief.

One interesting issue that comes up is the difference between generic drugs, such as Basic and brand named drugs such as Advil. One question implied that Advil, compared to generics, is ‘amazing,’ and referred to the opinion of the answer, that ‘nothing is better than the original.’

According to the individual who answered the question, the amount of ibuprofen may vary more or less than the amount that Advil states it contains. So just because it uses the same ingredient, how much is in it, and how it delivers to the body may be better than the generic. That is one person’s opinion and not something that this reviewer would speculate about.

The bottom line here is that if you have arthritis, muscle pain, fever, headache, etc., all of these products are highly recommended according to the hundreds of 5-star reviews and thousands of monthly sales.

How to choose? It comes down to your personal preference in the kind of pill you like, which is easier to swallow, and which brings on relief faster and lasts longer. These are subjective factors, that is, up to the individual to decide.

Is There a Difference Between Generic and Brand Name Drugs?

So, how do you decide what to buy? Go to this page.

Many of the brands shown there are ‘generic’. Generic drugs are those which are no longer covered by a patent, which makes them a lot cheaper.

It does point out that all its products are made according to the highest standards.

On the other hand, the University of New Hampshire makes a strong case for generic over prescription patented drugs.

If the quality is the same, but the price is lower, then what? Well, it boils down to the issues discussed earlier, such as how easy it is to take? At these prices, which are not high, even for the brand name drugs, it may not matter too much. Do you prefer easy to swallow gels, or does it not really matter to you?

Check out the Amazon listing for these offerings and see what you think is best.

Prescription vs. Over the Counter Drugs

A final consideration is whether you think you should get a prescription rather than a nonprescription OTC drug. Prescription drugs require you to see a doctor, which can take time and money for the doctor, and it is often a higher cost for the drug itself. Not discussed in this review are NSAIDs that require a prescription.

They’re generally stronger but may also have side effects, which you need to thoroughly discuss with your doctor. And, whenever your doctor recommends a drug, search by yourself ‘side effects of…..’ and see what results you get. Are potential side effects worth the benefit of the medicine itself?

On the other hand, if your condition really demands it, that visit to the doctor could make all the difference in your treatment being successful or not. For starters, click on the links here to see for yourself what works for you. If you want to get some fast relief and are willing to put off a visit to the doctor, then you may find the NSAIDs above are good alternatives. Good luck! Nobody wants to be in pain.

Here is a good place to start to get better fast!

What are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs?

These drugs include aspirin, Advil, and Aleve and are commonly used to reduce pain and fever. Many people reach for these drugs to help with headaches, body aches, swelling, and stiffness. The most common are aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen sodium. You can also get non-prescription NSAIDs over the counter in drug stores and supermarkets.

What are NSAIDs used for?

NSAIDs are often used for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, tendonitis, muscle aches, backaches, dental pain, gout pain, bursitis, and menstrual cramps.

How do NSAIDs work?

When you take NSAIDs, they block the production of certain chemicals in the body that causes inflammation. They can also help treat the pain and slow down the damage. They work very similarly to corticosteroids that are also known as steroids. However, they don’t have as many side effects as you would find with steroids.

How long can you use OTC NSAIDs?

You don’t want to use these medications for more than three days in the case of a fever or more than ten days for any kind of pain unless it has been cleared with your doctor. They are only meant for short-term use.

How long until they start to work?

Some NSAIDs you take may work within a couple of hours, while others may take a while. If you are taking them for sudden pain, then you may want to find an OTC NSAID that works quickly. These are usually the ones that also have to be taken every 4 to 6 hours for the pain.

What are some of the more common side effects of these anti-inflammatory medications?

Some have reported problems with gas, feeling bloated, heartburn, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and/or constipation. More serious side effects of NSAIDs to watch out for include dizziness, feelings of lightheadedness, problems with your balance, difficulty concentrating, and mild headaches.

Do these anti-inflammatory medications help with knee pain?

Naproxen has been ranked highly for its probability of improving function when it comes to knee pain. It was also ranked as one of the most effective individual treatments for knee pain to help reduce the pain and improve function. Following naproxen for knee pain, there are cortisone injections, PRP injections, ibuprofen, and then celecoxib.

Can NSAIDs cause stomach ulcers?

Since these anti-inflammatory medications block the Cox-1 enzyme and disrupt prostaglandin production in the stomach, NSAIDs can cause stomach ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding in some cases.

What is Reye’s Syndrome?

Reye’s Syndrome is a rare but serious condition that can cause swelling in the liver and the brain. It often affects children and teenagers that are recovering from some kind of viral infection like the flu or chickenpox. Aspirin has been found to contribute to the development of Reye’s Syndrome and is also related to mitochondrial damage caused by salicylates during a viral illness.

Can NSAIDs be used for long term pain?

NSAID medications are still popular medications used to treat chronic pain and long-term pain and to help reduce inflammation. Prescription NSAIDs are recommended for chronic pain and more long term use rather than the over the counter variety. This is especially true if someone has been found to have an increased risk of gastrointestinal complications.

Is there any kind of cardiovascular risk of using NSAIDs for pain?

Yes, there is. These anti-inflammatory medications can increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke. This is why it is important that you only take the dose you need for the short term. To avoid your cardiovascular risk, they should not be used for long-term pain.

Natural Remedies are as Old as Humanity

As long as there have been people, health, and freedom from sickness and pain have been almost as important as food, water, clothing, and shelter. And from prehistoric times until just recently, people relied on herbal medicines and natural remedies to find the cures they needed.

The fact is, until the development of modern chemistry, that’s all they had! There wasn’t a choice of ‘eating organic’ or ‘natural cures,’ because that’s all there was!

Here is just a shortlist of medicines from plants and natural sources:

  • Aspirin – A pain killer derived from the willow tree
  • Morphine – comes from opium poppies, is widely used to stop excruciating pain
  • Penicillin – discovered as a chemical in cheese mold, and used as an antibiotic
  • Caffeine – Most of us use it as a stimulant, it, of course, comes from coffee beans and tea
  • Cocaine – Grown high in the Andes Mountains of South America, it comes from coca leaves, and has been used to offset altitude sickness and increase energy levels. It was an original ingredient in Coca Cola

Benefits of Natural Remedies

When you dive into natural remedies, you need to take a look at all the possible benefits you will find. For example, some natural remedies are actually more affordable than conventional medicine and far easier to obtain than prescription medicine.

Some natural remedies have also been found to help stabilize hormones and a person’s metabolism and promote natural healing throughout the body. They can strengthen the immune system and have far fewer side effects than conventional medicine.

With natural remedies, you can take control over your health and well-being and eliminate the number of prescriptions you may already be taking to help heal or manage pain. Before trying any natural remedies for pain, however, you should always discuss it with your doctor first. This is especially true if you are already taking any over the counter medications or prescription medications.

Modern Medicine Versus Traditional Medicine

Probably the biggest misconception in modern society is that we humans exist outside the laws of nature. Think about it:

In addition to the use of medicines in indigenous cultures such as Native Americans before the use of modern medicines, many cultures developed their own forms of medicine using plants.

We breathe air as all animals do. We eat food that comes from Nature. We are living organisms and share lots of DNA with both other mammals as well as vertebrates.

So if you kiss that frog, he or she may turn out to be a prince or princess in disguise….but seriously, all this means is that we are intertwined with nature, which traditional peoples have known for literally thousands of years.

Understanding how to use natural medicines is one of the most basic skills people have had for centuries. We’d all be better off knowing something about it. Examples of systems of medicine from other cultures are:

Herbs used in Ayurveda, which developed in India

  • Ayurvedic Medicine from India
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine
  • Naturopathic Medicine
  • Homeopathy

For example, naturopathic medicine is a system that uses natural remedies to help the body heal itself. It embraces many therapies, including herbs, massage, acupuncture, exercise, and nutrition.

Here is more information about Naturopathic Medicine specifically as it relates to knees.

Possible Disadvantages of “Big Pharma” Drugs

Needless to say, modern medicines have been a great step forward in treating both maladies as well as their symptoms. In the “old days,” if you had to have surgery, they’d give you massive amounts of alcohol….not a good thing.

However, modern forms of anesthesia have been a huge improvement in pain management during surgery. Likewise, antibiotics have cut the rates of infection and death due to disease or injury. However, we see some serious disadvantages to pharmaceuticals, such as:

  • Inadequate testing, which resulted in serious side effects, an example being Thalidomide, which caused serious congenital disabilities. Or Vioxx, which resulted in a number of deaths.
  • Overprescribing, especially antibiotics. Over time, disease and infection-related germs and pathogens develop resistance to such medicines. We see a resurgence of diseases like tuberculosis, or flesh-eating bacteria, as these noxious organisms become immune to the medicine.
  • Improper or even unethical use. Nowadays, we are bombarded with advertising, to scare us into begging our doctor to give us some medicine, which not only costs money but may have side effects, which then need yet more medicine. It becomes a downward spiral of overdependence on manufactured drugs.

The best current example is the opioid crisis, where doctors end up making addicts of their patients.

Graph of opioid deaths show steady increase

US Drug Deaths Are Showing Alarming Increases Over Time

Possible Advantage of Natural vs. Manufactured Drugs

There may be several advantages to using natural medicines instead of pharmaceutical medicines, one being that you get additional ingredients or trace minerals that medicines made in a lab just don’t have. As the well-known site, Natural News, points out:

“While the pharmaceutical industry thinks it can just copy the primary medicinal compounds found in plant medicines, the truth is that these isolates will never compare to the real deal. By missing out on the synergistic effects of trace minerals, pharmaceutical copycats pale in comparison.”

Herbs vs. Pharmaceuticals: Understanding the Effectiveness of Natural Medicine

From a nutritional point of view, suppose you had a disease called scurvy, which is actually a severe Vitamin C deficiency. You could take pure Vitamin C, but if you take it in the form of an orange or a lemon or lime, you get complimentary chemicals called bioflavonoids, which aid in the absorption and use of Vitamin C by your body.

Turmeric, a relative of ginger root, is well known as an anti-inflammatory. So, it is best taken with Black Pepper, which makes the turmeric absorb into the body more effectively.

At least partly because of the problems coming from modern pharmaceuticals, people are returning to traditional and more natural medicines.

Disadvantages of Natural Herbal Medicines

There are some disadvantages to traditional herbal medicine.

  • It may be difficult to get consistency in strength
  • If you buy a prepared or prepackaged herb, it may also be expensive, especially if it is in capsule form
  • In rare cases, herbal remedies may interact negatively with other drugs, especially pharmaceuticals

Are You Someone Who Studies Plants – Or Would Like to?

Would you like to become an herbalist? You could go to a special school that teaches these specialized skills, which would take several years and probably several thousand dollars. Or to start with, get a good guide for herbalism for beginners.

But your best bet is to simply have a handbook or guide, where you can read about natural herbal medicine, see photos, and learn their healing properties, to see what makes the most sense in your situation. These books are available at a relatively low cost.

Here are the 5 best traditional herbal medicine books you’ll find.

The Lost Book of Remedies is excellent. It covers over 200 different plant remedies and classifies them by where they are found:

  • Backyard Weeds
  • Forests and Woodlands
  • Wild Plants in Great Plains
  • Trees and Shrubs
  • Coastal, Tropical and Water-Loving Plants
  • Nationwide Plants
  • Household Remedies (not plants but easily available items)

The index is quite helpful because it lists various maladies and then points you to the page where you can find the right plant or treatment. It places them in alphabetical order, so you can search the issue you have, and then find the plants to use, plus what page it is listed on, so you can find them easily.

For example, under “Bones,” it lists Osteoporosis, then cites four treatments: Red Clover, Black Cohosh, Evening Primrose, and the non-plant item, Diatomaceous Earth. It gives the pages where they’re located, and the index is pleasant to read, easily accessible, unlike typical indices with small print.

On Amazon, the book is available in paperback. At the time of this writing, it has a 4.5-star rating; however, it has just 80 reviews. That is less than the usual number I usually use in a review. However, at this writing, 88% are four and 5-star reviews. 6% gave it a 1-star rating. The main issue those reviews have is that the book is overpriced, and the print quality is not the best.

On the other hand, 70 out of the 80 reviews cite it as a valuable reference, with lots of information and excellent color illustrations.

As the name suggests, Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine is an excellent reference book.

The Table of Contents divides the material into the following sections:

  • The Development of Herbal Medicine, which gives the theory and background of using herbs as medicine
  • Key Medicinal Plants. This is the main section covering 100 of the most commonly used plants for medicine
  • Other Medicinal Plants. This section covers 450 plants that are also used
  • Herbal Remedies for Home Use. You can learn how to grow and prepare your own medicines at home
  • A final section with Glossary, Bibliography, General Index, and a particularly useful Index of Herbs by Ailment

The book sells on Amazon in hardcover. As for statistics, it has a stunning 97% positive rating, with not a single negative review at the time of this writing. The number of reviews is less than the 200 I look for; however, with such a positive rating, this book is an obvious choice, indeed selling close to 500 copies per month.

As the title suggests, this book is more about how to make medicines from herbs. It divides herbs according to their different types, for example, Pungent herbs, acrid herbs, and salty herbs. A total of 13 different types of herbs. It also recommends different types of solvents. A solvent is a medium that delivers the herb to the body. It recommends using water, alcohol, glycerin, vinegar, or oil.

However, each type of herb fits different solvents. So, the book is really what to do with an herb, once you know what you need for a particular condition. As of this writing, it has a 4.8-star rating, with 214 reviews, 96% 4 of 5 stars. There is not much wrong with this book from an herbal preparation point of view.

The book also has a Materia medica, which lists many well-known as well as some newer herbs. This book would be a good complement to books that emphasize the identification and use of various herbs. This book is available either in Kindle or as a paperback.

As the title suggests, this book of herbs is a very practical way to ‘teach by doing.’ While it does give some theory of how herbs work, unlike other books reviewed here, it limits the number of herbs to those you would commonly find right at home. It then gives you specific recipes for how to use them.

Apparently, a lot of people like this approach, because it sells over 500 copies a month, according to the latest statistics (which change daily). It also has well over 1300 reviews. What is really stunning is the fact that the average rating, as of this writing, is 4.9 stars, with not a single 1-star review, a highly unusual thing for any item.

The main purpose of this book and why in my opinion it is so popular is because most people don’t want to spend hours, days and years studying herbs a discipline. People just want to know, for example, if their child has a sore throat, is there a way to treat it without going to the drug store. And there is! Cinnamon tea. Or for colds and flu, Ginger Lemon tea. The book gives numerous examples and recipes that are highly practical without being technical.

So, Alchemy of Herbs is great for the average person who just wants some basic knowledge of how to treat common ailments easily and cheaply. The book is well illustrated and very pleasant to read. Another benefit of this book is that it comes in three different formats:

  • Kindle – for those of you who prefer to go digital and not have lots of heavy books
  • Paperback – convenient to keep on the kitchen shelf
  • Spiral-bound – best if you want to use it while working. The pages stay open

For your basic ‘home use’ herb book, this is the one you’ll want.

As of this writing, this book is the #1 Best Seller in the Herbal Remedies category, and has a 4.7-star rating, with over 400 reviews. The main difference between this book and the others is that it gives historical context to the question of the diet itself.

As the title suggests, it recommends a real change in dietary habit, based on the idea that humans originated from Africa, and the original diet which is plant-based is superior to the diets that humans adopted as they migrated to more Northerly climates, and started to eat meat.

There is an emerging movement towards veganism or a 100% plant-based diet. So, if you’re attached to that T bone steak or KFC chicken, this book may not be for you.

However, if you find that your health is in such a state that you really need to rethink what you eat, then this may well be the book for you. Indeed, the lead review even cites the reviewer’s mother, who had cancer, and benefited from changing her diet to an alkaline food and herb diet.

Alkaline Herbal Medicine also points out that the pharmaceutical industry derives 50% of its drugs from plants a point they really don’t want you to know. Indeed, buying an herb, or worse (from a corporation’s point of view) growing your own medicine for a fraction of what they charge, is way cheaper than going to a doctor, waiting for hours, paying for a prescription, and so on. Plus, it’s a lot more fun!

In sum, if you have doubts about your health and want to make a real change, instead of just treating this or that ailment, this may be just what you are looking for.

I included this book as an honorable mention. Rosemary Gladstar’s Medicinal Herbs: A Beginner’s Guide: 33 Healing Herbs to Know, Grow, and Use is also a best seller on Amazon in the category of herbal gardening.

So, it is not precisely on the topic here. Also, it does not have a very large list of medicinal plants. But if you are looking for a beginner’s guide, to get you started in herbal medicine, then this book is also worth checking out.

If you type into the search area, “Herbal Remedy Books” in Amazon, it shows over 10,000 results. That is Ten Thousand choices of books in the category of Herbal Remedies! How are we supposed to decide what to buy?

On the one hand, I looked at what books have strong sales, which tells what the market thinks. But I also looked at books that have very high ratings. Every book reviewed here has at least a 4.5 rating, which is excellent. Second, I realized that people might be looking for quite different things when searching for a book about herbal medicines.

Some of you may want a much larger list and overview of all the possibilities. On that basis, the Lost Book of Remedies, or the Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine would be the books I recommend. If you are looking for the more technical aspects of preparation of herbal cures, then The Modern Herbal Dispensary would be a good choice.

If you are doing a serious rethink of your overall health and want a road map for that, then Alkaline Herbal Medicine is the book for you. And if you just want a basic book of household remedies with simple to prepare recipes, then Alchemy of Herbs or Rosemary Gladstar’s Medicinal Herbs would be good choices.

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this article, and it helps you clarify both your own objectives in looking for books about herbal remedies, as well as specific suggestions based on your needs.

Herbal Remedy FAQ

Are herbal remedies considered medicines?

When using the term herbal remedy, you need to remember that they are types of dietary supplements and not actual medications. They are not regulated as medicines are, they do not need to go through extensive testing before they are sold, and labels do not need to be approved.

Does natural mean safe?

Just because something is labeled as natural and is said to have natural ingredients doesn’t always mean it is safe. It is important to do your homework and your own research and to read the books we have listed above to get a better understanding of the different herbal remedies there are and how they work.

How do you choose and use herbal remedies safely?

There are some herbal remedies mentioned in the books above that can help you keep healthy and feel better. However, it is important to use them safely. Before choosing any to use, discuss it with your doctor. They can help determine if the remedy will be safe and if there are any risks in your particular situation. You should also look very closely at the claims being made about each natural remedy you are interested in and how it is described. If it sounds way too good to be true, then it probably is.

Can natural remedies help with chronic pain?

If you have been using pain relief medication like acetaminophen or ibuprofen to treat pain and have been experiencing side effects, then you may be interested in trying more natural remedies. Cloves, for example, are often used as a topical pain reliever and have also been found to treat fungal infections. This is because the active ingredient in cloves is eugenol, and it is a natural pain reliever you will find in many topical pain relief applications.

What is a Knee Support Brace?

A Knee Support Brace, as I discuss here, is something you strap onto your knee, rather than slip-on. The most common term people use is ‘knee brace.’ There is a lot of confusion surrounding those things you see people wearing on the basketball court, in the gym, while running, and so on.

So, here are three knee braces that you strap onto your knee to give knee support.

Knee Pain Searches for ‘Knee Brace’ as a Solution

In the past ten years, Knee Braces and Knee Support Braces are becoming more and more popular. Google searches have jumped 3X since 2009! This is because the population is aging. As we get older, the likelihood of wear and tear rises, resulting in knee pain.

For active young people, strains, sprains, or other injuries cause people to look for a knee brace or knee support brace. A knee brace can be a big help in relieving arthritis pain and healing knee injuries.

Notice that the searches peak during the summer months when people are more active. In winter, not as many people are active, so there are fewer injuries. That is purely an educated guess.

The number of searches for ‘knee brace’ has tripled since 2009.

Knee Support Braces

The following 3 Knee Support Braces are very popular. Unlike Knee Sleeves, they use straps to wrap the knee and compress and stabilize the knee by tightening the straps.

Unlike closed patella pain-relieving knee braces, the EXOUS Knee Brace Support Protector is an open Patella wrap that helps to protect the knee joint but offers a specific range of motion. The patella is a fancy word for your knee cap. Some knee braces leave the patella exposed, while others cover it.

The Exous Knee Support Brace is less bulky than the two other knee braces featured here. But may not provide the kind of support needed in case of a real injury. It has a long list of positive testimonies.

Most of the open patella knee wraps you see have either 2 or 3 straps to hold it in place. The fact is, these types of wraps tend to slip, which can be annoying. So, having four straps is a definite plus. This product is admittedly more expensive than the cheaper, 2, and 3 strap wraps, but it is worth it, just because it performs better.

Two dedicated patella straps give the patella tendon extra support, so that relieves pain in the front of the knee, and offers jumpers knee pain relief and help to stabilize the knee cap.

Be sure, if you are considering ordering, to measure your knee, since there are specific limits on leg size for this knee brace wrap. The features of this brace are as follows:

  • Relieves Patella Tendonitis
  • Jumpers Knee Meniscus Tear
  • ACL Lateral & Medial Ligament Sprains
  • Comfort Design
  • True Non-Slip FIT
  • Arthritis – Sport – Running

  • This knee compression brace was designed to minimize knee pain and provide as much support as possible.
  • It specifically targets those who deal with meniscus or ACL issues, jumper’s knee, and long hours wear and tear.
  • The knee compression brace is made of quality materials to ensure durability.
  • It moves fluidly rather than stiffly. This allows better range of motion during healing and physical activity.
  • It is a lighter weight knee brace, which makes it better for frequent motion.
  • Side stabilizers also help protect the knee from twisting and sprains.

  • This is a small issue, but machine washing will harm this product up, so only hand wash
  • A few people have questioned how long the product lasts
  • Some say that two of the straps are too short so that it is not as stable as they’d like

This product is relatively inexpensive compared to some of the more expensive, complex stabilizer wrap knee braces. The Exous Knee Wrap Brace is a quality way to reduce knee pain, help heal meniscus and ACL issues, and get extra support. It is a good knee brace for running.

The Shock Doctor Hinged Maximum Support Compression Knee Brace is a more serious variation of the available braces. A more expensive option, to be sure, but it makes up for the cost in performance. Just a glance at it tells you it really means business. Its bilateral hinges and strong fabric ensure both a comfortable range of motion and reliable support.

This knee support brace is rated as at a Level 3 Performance Rating. “Medium stability and support for moderate to significant ligament sprains, muscle strains, and unstable joints allowing for use as necessary for recovery.

Dual hinge and stays for maximum support and protection.” However, it also has this disclaimer: “This product is not a substitute for medical care. Always seek professional medical advice for the diagnosis and treatment of pain, injury, or irritation.”

Ultra-support for:

  • ACL or PCL injuries
  • Lateral and medial instability
  • Patella issues
  • Hyperextension
  • Ligament sprains
  • Other meniscus injuries

Even though it appears to be stiff or immovable, it rates to be a very comfortable fit. Since you’d typically use it post ins, keeping movement in line is crucial to recovery. But there is much more to note about this product.

  • The curve of this support intentionally matches the body’s anatomical shape so that it can fit perfectly.
  • The use of the bilateral hinges helps to increase performance as well as stability. The hinges use tempered aluminum that also assists in stability.
  • It works in a way to improve proprioception or bio-neurological stress awareness.
  • The X-Fit strap system adds increased stability and pressure.
  • The Hypalon sleeves and four-way Lycra mesh backing helps support the back of the knee and thus, the whole design. There is also vented Neoprene material for ultimate breathing.
  • Patella support is improved using Lycra as well, which ensures lasting comfort.
  • Front face stitching creates a cool look that’s also long-lasting and provides an interesting aesthetic.
  • Easy to grab finger tabs for easier grip. The tabs are important for adjustment and removal since compression knee sleeves are supposed to fit snugly.

  • This is a pricier product. This support blends brace technology and compression relief. It is meant for more serious conditions, while still allowing you to participate in sports.
  • Sizing has been an issue with a number of customers, with the most common complaint is that it is smaller than they anticipated. Plus, they couldn’t get a refund.

Since the perfect fit is crucial to a proper healing process of achieving usable support, the Shock Doctor Ultra-Knee Support with Bilateral Braces offers several sizes, which gives it an advantage over a few of the variations we have explored. This knee brace does come off as too strong in some cases, but for many injuries, a high level of support is crucial to really get the job done.

The Shock Doctor was developed with these factors in mind. By promoting proper blood flow and therapeutic warmth, it has easily gained a well-known reputation. For more information, go here.

McDavid is one of the best known, most reputable brands in knee joint support products. As a name brand, its offerings are sometimes more expensive than generic or smaller, less well-known companies.

Nonetheless, it provides a range of knee sleeves, braces, and supports depending on the nature of the knee problems you have. For a convenient chart of 6 models and their uses, you can go here, and scroll down to the bottom of the page.

To save you the trouble of visiting the page, suffice it to say that of those six models, they range in use from grades:

  • 1 – Minor Pains and Sprains
  • 2 and 3 – Moderate to Major Instabilities
  • and 3+, which is for Major Instabilities

The 4200 reviewed here is the 3+ grade. It is a combination brace and sleeve, designed for major sprains of MCL, ACL, PCL and meniscus injuries, prevention of hyperextension, recovery and pain relief.

Unlike more modest knee sleeves, this McDavid product has bilateral aluminum hinges. So, it has both a knee sleeve and a semi-rigid brace component. It uses its BIO-LOGIX philosophy to create this heavy-duty device.

As their product description notes, this is their top of the line product, for Major Instabilities, which combines both compression as well as metal hinge support for weak, unstable knees. If you have ever had your knee buckle under you, you’ll know what they are talking about.

  • The metal hinges give support where, in the case of severe sprain or injury, or operative recovery, when the joint is severely compromised, sleeves or wraps without the hinges may not be enough to support your body weight
  • Even though the hinges are metal, since they are well-designed aluminum, they are relatively lightweight

  • Since they’re intended to emphasize stability over flexibility, they don’t perform the way a non-hinged brace does
  • Given the more complex design and variety of components, it’s more expensive than the other knee support braces featured in this overview

To put it simply, if you’ve got a major knee problem, and are not in a position to run marathons and play in your local sports team, but are just trying to get around, this is probably your best bet. To see the McDavid 4200 Bionic Knee Brace, go here.
